Uninstall Vista, install XP? (XP SP2)

I was planning to get my wife a laptop within a few months. I understand that after a 1-2 months it will be very difficult to buy a new laptop which doesn't come pre-loaded with Vista. I don't want Vista. Does this mean I'm forced to act now and buy a machine loaded with XP; or rather, can I take my time, buy a Vista machine and a copy of XP, wipe Vista off and install XP? Or is that tempting fate?

Obviously I can't know the real answer to the question but I would think that for the near-in future, you could order a new laptop with XP if you prefer that to Vista. Time will tell however...

Re: Uninstall Vista, install XP? (XP SP2)

Hi there

Difficult one to answer, I would say that eventually all new laptops and PC's will come with Vista, certainly here in the . For a little while our corporate PC build was Win 2K and we were being shipped laptops with XP on them. We simply created a Ghost image of the XP build and then installed Win2K on them.

I am assuming you are buying this for home use and there the cost of Ghost may be limiting but you may think of buying some form of software that you can take an image of the new Vista build, keep it in a safe place and install Win XP along with all the drivers. Once you are ready place the image back on, you should still be covered for the licence but check locally.

There are often discussions in Software Finds and Wants here in the Lounge and there are some experts that could assist you there with the best choice of imaging software.

Thanks. I spoke with Dell here in the UK, which said they will be selling XP laptops for "a while longer" but weren't any more specific. I'd hoped to postpone the purchase for financial reasons but I guess I'm being forced to cough up sooner.

We just bought the wife a new laptop with Vista Home Premium. It is working just great and she is starting to clean off the demo and trail stuff.
It is a Sony VGN-C220 and the price was right at Frys.

Now, back to your question, why do you want to REMOVE Vista?

The problem I see, is that the OEM may NOT provide any XP drivers for the devices in a NEW Vista machine.

Now running HP Pavilion a6528p, with Win7 64 Bit OS.

Re: Uninstall Vista, install XP? (XP SP2)

Thanks both of you for your replies.

To answer your question, why would I want to remove Vista... a few reasons.

1) I've been through the guineau pig routine a few too many times with Microsoft -- rush out and buy a new OS, which is a de facto beta, then endure various forms of grief until they come out with patches... this time I'll wait a year or so for the patches

2) A number of reviews have been fairly negative; not all were from hard-core Microsoft-bashers. The stuff about the terms of use are particulalry disturbing.

3) In principle, I hate being sheperded around by Microsoft. I respect them a lot for creating a standard which makes millions of PCs and files compatible, and I think Excel will be remembered historically as a real technological landmark. But I will upgrade when I feel the need, not because they need to grow sales.

Good on you Lingyai... I have a similar outlook to you, I always wait for the first Service Pack to come through

Re: Uninstall Vista, install XP? (XP SP2)

A few weeks ago I bought a new computer. I installed Vista on it, didn't like it, decided to install XP Professional on it: The installation process aborted with the message "You are trying to install an older operating system" (or similar message, I don't recall the exact wording). So, I booted off the XP CD and installed it that way.

This was on an empty hard disk, both Vista setup and XP setup insisted in formatting it. So, I'd say if you have any data on a Vista PC, make sure you have a complete backup before installing XP over it.
Cheers, Claude.

Claude, was there an option to Dual boot? That may be an answer.

Re: Uninstall Vista, install XP? (XP SP2)

Not sure, in any case, I just wanted to get rid of it: Having had nothing but the operating system installed on a brand new computer, looking around the control panel and help files, it crashed twice on me for no aparent reason. So, I just rebooted and left it standing there, 20 minutes later, it crashed again.

Like others, I'll wait at least a year before venturing near it. BTW, having installed XP on that PC, it's worked perfectly ever since....
Cheers, Claude.
