New-Fangled Shortcuts (XP-SP-2)

Is there a way to "turn off" WinXP's way of making these shortcuts that have the Target field grayed out so that you can't modify it, and just revert back to the "old" type of shortcuts?

How are you creating these "new-fangled" shortcuts? If you right-click an empty part of a folder or of the desktop and select New > Shortcut from the popup menu, or if you select File > New > Shortcut in Windows Explorer, or if you drag a file or folder with the right mouse button, and select Create Shortcut Here from the popup menu when you release the mouse button, or if you drag a file or folder to your Quick Launch toolbar, you'll get an "old-fashioned" shortcut.

    Hans:

Yea, but a lot of the time (MS Office for example) the programs create the shortcuts themselves on program installation.

Wweeelll , I would get myself a pen and paper, RH mouse click the fangled shortcut, select properties, Click "Find Target" , the folder containing the executable will appear, RH mouse click the executable create shortcut on desktop...voila new old fashioned icon, make adaptations to your needs.

The pen and paper, I hear you ask, have a game of tic tac toe

Since Office and other programs create 'special' shortcuts on installation there is nothing you can do about the initial creation. You may be able to delete the special shorcut and create one of your own that will be a 'normal' shortcut.

That's not Windows XP's doing, it's those programs. As Joe already indicated, you cannot prevent that. Jerry and Joe have already suggested workarounds. But I don't see the problem - the shortcuts work, don't they?

No, AAMOF, they weren't. The particular one(s) that caused the initial topic had spawned these shortcuts on install, just like Office does. Why, I have NO idea. The old way worked fine, IMHO. Anyway,

Once you find that they don't work, tracking down the culprit can be a bit more of a pain than need be,

    What's gained by these, anywho?

    Chuck

My guess would be your credit card when you call tech support to ask them the same question. Actually, they're Windows Installer shortcuts that don't have any "special" properties, but were intended to help resolve sommon installation issues (the purpose of Windows Installer itself). Without going into too much detail, let's say you changed a program option or location... the Windows Installer shortcut would still be valid, because it resolves the location in a different way.

My guess you're right... But I guess that that's at least some type of (Microsoft) logical answer...

    Thanks for the help...
