Watched Threads

I have noticed recently that when I post a reply or start a new thread, that post shows up in my Watched Threads list as an Unread or New post.
Up until a while ago, if I posted something, the thread would show OK in Watched Threads but not showing the flag as an Unread. Since I posted it, I should have read it already or so the logic went.
Now I have to go back into that thread and then go back to Control Panel to register the fact that I read it.

Am I making any sense here?

Are you doing anything different, like logging out immediately after posting a new thread?

Re: Watched Threads

Leif,
No, nothing different that I can think of.
I don't log out right after posting a new thread or reply.
As described, I can post something, then go back to control panel and there it is as a new post. I must go back into the thread and then back to control panel to have it shown as read.
I deleted my old lounge cookie and had it reset a new one with same results. ???

Re: Watched Threads

I don't have quite the same problem as Bob, Leif, but on occasion the Watched Threads list does act a little funny for me also and I figured it was a minor annoyance and just lived with it. Every once in awhile, an item in my Watched Threads list will show up with the "new" flag and when I click on it, the thread will show with only posts that I've already looked at. Sometimes the most recent post will be one of mine and at other times a post from someone else, but always something that I've already looked at. I guess it's just one of those things.

I might add that, in spite of being told a long time ago that it doesn't matter, that the Watched Threads list only takes a minimal amount of Lounge server space, I still occasionally delete all but the most current month posts/threads, mostly just to keep the total list from being so long. It's a pain to do with all those check boxes but I do it every so often anyway...

Still messing around with this annoying problem and haven't gained any headway at all.

Besides BigAl's similar problem, I wonder if any other Loungers have noticed this behaviour?

Re: Watched Threads

FWIW, I normally don't use watched threads (it would be rather annoying in my situation ) but as a test, I just turned on the setting to add all posts/threads I make to the watched threads list. A post I made in Test Area (now deleted again) and a reply I posted in the Access forum both showed up in the Watched Threads list as 'read'.

I do occasionally see threads I have already read turn to unread in the forums themselves, so apparently the Lounge software can get confused about which threads I have read and which ones I haven't. I admit that this is slightly annoying, but I can live with it.

Perhaps Claude can look into this.

Re: Watched Threads

Bob,
First I didn't want to your thread with a slightly different matter, but since you ask, and Al mention his observation.

For quite some time (years?); sometimes when I have posted a reply or started a new thread (I always put them in my Watched Threads), and then from that post clicks "Controls", I can find that some other thread in my "watched Threads" has a "New flag". When I go there, there is nothing new.

Sometimes this is obvious: I can find the "New flag", as described above, on a thread not at the top of the list, i.e. if new it should have bumped to the top of the list.

Of course, if two threads at the top of the list are new, and I read the first one and then press F5 (refresh) or go back via "Controls", there will only be a new flag on the second thread in the list.

But this has not been the case; if I find the "fake New flag", it has always been directly after a new post, and it has always been on another item in Watched threads.

Re: Watched Threads

Hans,
I can see that being something you can live with occasionally but now this is a regular every time thing and was definitely not the way it reacted up until recently. I think the Lounge software is really confused at this point. At least in my case?

( I don't see why you don't leave Watched Threads" on? )

Hopefully the "Big Cheese" will get a chance to look at this and come up with an answer.

Re: Watched Threads

Bob,

Like Hans, I don't use watched threads at all. I had a look at the code and the data and it's going to take me a while to figure out what is going on. To further complicate things, I have to go overseas and won't be back here until early March
Cheers, Claude.

That's fine. I appreciate you checking in to this and hope you can come up with something positive.

Claude,
Can't wait for your return. I've been trying various things to try to solve this or work around it and with no sucess.
It's getting really annoying. Hope something can be worked out.

Re: Watched Threads

Hey Bob, just for grins, have you done my little "housekeeping" thing on your watched threads to see if it does anything "positive" for you? By that I mean, do a View All and LABORIOUSLY start at the top of the list and check all the old ones for deletion. The only way I found to speed up the process a bit is to use the tab key to go from one check box down to the next and if you're fast enough with the keyboard, you can check a whole bunch of them and delete. I periodically delete all but the current month and don't have the problem as seriously as you seem to. I admit that I don't know if it's because of shortening the list or not.

Re: Watched Threads

Al,
I do try to keep the Watched Threads list short and current. I try to keep the number at about the last 10 or 15 active threads. When a thread has quieted down or is "solved", I remove it from the list.

My REAL problem is not the length of the list but the fact that it is not updating the list to show that I have read a post or even worse, it will show one of my own new posts as unread until I go back into Controls and then access the thread a second time, go back to controls and then it will show as a read post. The back and forth is what's bugging me.
Until recently, I would make a post and it would show up as read right away. ( of course I read it...I posted it )

I've checked my profile many times and don't see any obvious changes there. I have reset the Lounge cookie many times. I wonder if it is only me having this trouble or are there others who have just not noticed this situation?

Exactly what I was wondering! In my case, the anomolies are infrequent, but you seem to be having a continual problem. Well, we'll just have to bite the bullet and wait to see if Cheese can find anything when he returns ...
