    Word formatting (2003)

A weird thing has started happening in Word. If I reformat a paragraph (bullets, Bold, centre etc), Word formats the whole document that way. If I then press Undo, it undoes everything except what I wanted done in the first place - just the paragraph formatted. If I format more than 1 paragraph at a time, everything is OK. I have tried deleting Normal.dot and letting Word recreate one but before long it is at it again. It means that every time I want to format a single paragraph, I have to wait until Word does the whole document (and this can take a while if it is a long one) then press Undo.

Does anyone have any ideas on what the %#$@!%%&** is going on?

    Thanks.

This probably means that styles have been set to update automatically.
    - Activate the Styles and Formatting task pane.
    - Right-click a style and select Modify from the popup menu.
    - Clear the Automatically Update check box (if it is set).
    - Click OK.
    - Repeat for other styles.
This will work for a single document. If it happens in all new documents, you'll have to do the same for Normal.dot.
