    Printer Sharing

I am running Win98SE and want to share a printer with a networked PC. I already have file and printer sharing enabled. According to Windows Help I should:
Click Start, point to Settings, and then click Printers.
Click the printer you want to share.
On the File menu, click Properties.
Click the Sharing tab, and then click Shared As.
My problem is , there is no Sharing tab!!!
    What can I do?

    Re: Printer Sharing

I would suggest going into your "Network" settings, and disabling the file and printer sharing options, and press OK.

Reboot as requested, and go back in to enable them. Sometimes the OS doesn't work correctly on the first attempt <img src=/S/grin.gif border=0 alt=grin width=15 height=15>.

    Re: Printer Sharing

Tried this but it had no effect. File and printer sharing have been enabled since I purchased my new PC but till recently have been using the networked PC for printing. Yesterday I installed two printers on the new PC and want to access them from the networked one, hence my initial query. Any other ideas?

Are all computers running Windows 98? If not what OS's are they running?

Now running HP Pavilion a6528p, with Win7 64 Bit OS.

The PC on which I have installed the two printers is running W98SE. The computer to which it is networked has Win95

    Re: Printer Sharing

Both computers are networked, you need to have the sharing turned on, on both machines.
Are you using a hub or direct twisted cable for the connection?

Now running HP Pavilion a6528p, with Win7 64 Bit OS.

Yes, file and printer sharing is enabled on both PCs. I am using a direct cable connection.

    Re: Printer Sharing

Kiaora Phil, by direct cable connection, do you mean using a parallel cable between the machines, or a peer to peer coaxial network cable???? If the former I don't think that is considered a network? If peer to peer then it should work ok.

    Re: Printer Sharing

A peer to peer coaxial cable. I can share files between the two PCs and I can print a document on theWin98 PC by using the printer attached to the Win95 PC so the network is working OK.

It's just that the "shared as" tab does not appear when I click Properties on either of the two printers I installed on the Win98 PC.

    Re: Printer Sharing

I know it sounds like a stupid suggestion, but double check on the Win98 PC the "Network Neighbourhood" settings for "Share my printer" (or whatever it actually says) is turned on. It sounds like it may not be.

    Re: Printer Sharing

Further to my last reply - I deleted and re-installed the two printers (for the third time) last night and suddenly the sharing tabs appeared!! Don't ask how or why! Anyway everthing is working as it should now.
    Thanks for your help.
