Mouse paralized/task bar (XP 2 Home)

Out of the blue,my mouse stopped working on the task bar(worked everywhere else on desk top),even the clock stopped.I could not turn off pc,except by mechanically shutting it off, which did it no good.
Can you advise what to do in a situation like this?Is there a less harmful way to "turn off"?
    Thanks very much!

I'm not sure if you have a combination of problems or what! Let's start with this: will the task bar come up if you use Ctrl-Esc keyboard combination? If it will, you should be able to navigate around using either the arrow keys or tab. You might want to try either #99 or #128 at Troubleshooting Windows XP, Tweaks and Fixes for Windows XP

You can also use Windows Key shortcuts to navigate around:

Windows Key + D: Show Desktop*

Windows Key + E: Windows Explorer

Windows Key + F: Find Files or Folders...

Windows Key + M: Minimize All Windows

Windows Key + Shift+M: Undo Minimize All

    Windows Key + R: Run...

Windows Key + Tab: Select Task

Windows Key + Break: System Properties

Windows Key + F1: Windows Help

Use the keyboard. Hit the Windows Key (the one with the Windows Flag on it) to bring up the Start Menu and then use the arrow keys to navigate to the Turn Off Computer button (or anywhere else on the Start Menu you want to go).

    You're very welcome. <img src=/S/smile.gif border=0 alt=smile width=15 height=15>

Could you tell us if the fix from Kelly's Korner worked, the TweakUI fix or if you are using the keyboard workarounds ?? Letting us know what worked helps us to help others. Thanks.

Re: Mouse paralized/task bar (XP 2 Home)

    Hi,
This method was unknown to me(beginner in computer(forever!),but tried this one and it works excellently well. The problem of frozen task bar has only happened ONE time since the 2 years I have been using a computer, never before or since.I pushed the turn off button to turn off, which of course did not save things,so after the pc was slower, even though I used a restore point of an earlier date.
Thanks very much again, you people are "sights for sore eyes"in more ways than you can imagine.
    John
