vista won't let me add printer (vista home basic)

    here's my setup:

I have 3 computers that are all hooked to the same router

computer #1 is an XP box with printer attached to it by USB, that printer is shared

computer #2 is a Win 2000 box, that prints to the sahred printer t

computer #3 is a new Vista machine, it sees the printer attached to #1 as a network printer, but when I try to add it, I get an "access is denied" message

I can't figure this out, any help would be greatly appreciated

From the Vista machine can you access any of the Shared files on the same computer that the printer is connected to?

If not, check your firewall on the computer with the shared printer, as it (the firewall) may be blocking the IP address of the Vista machine.

HINT, when you can see the printer from the Vista machine using "Windows Explorer, Network, 'Named Computer', Printers" right click the wanted printer and then select "Connect" and this will copy the needed driver to the local machine and set up the shared printer on the local machine.

Now running HP Pavilion a6528p, with Win7 64 Bit OS.

I suspect that the username or password that you have used on the Vista PC is not the same as the ones on the XP system.

My experience is that if you have to specify exactly the same username and password on both PCs, if you have different usernames or passwords, or if one PC has a blank password, then you get access errors.

I believe that some people have a method that works with blank passwords, but I have never been able to get this to work.

yes, Vista sees the printer. I can navitgate to it from the Vista machine to the XP machine's printers folder, I can right click on it, I can choose "connect...", the resut is "access is denied".

My Win2K machine had no trouble connecting to this printer.

So to run Vista successfully in a home environment of 3 computers all sharing the same router, you have to be a network engineer. Thanks microsoft.

Have a look at what Microsoft says Windows Vista Help: Networking. This stuff is usually very basic but it may help.

Is it possible that the Vista computer requires Vista Drivers for the printer?

Is it possible that the Vista computer requires Vista Drivers for the printer?

Unless the printer in question is a relic or some "less than popular" brand, Vista should have a basic driver for it included. What you do NOT want to do is install non-Vista drivers for peripherals hoping they will work. A quick check on the manufacturer's website should provide information about Vista compatibility. Epson, for example, has a dedicated section for Vista drivers listing models that have drivers in Vista and some that they have updated and can be downloaded.

    from this MS article

"If you recently installed a new version of Windows, changed the printer driver software, or are trying to print to the printer for the first time, you might need to install printer drivers that are compatible with the version of Windows that you're running. If you are trying to use a printer that is plugged in to another computer and shared on the network, make sure that a driver for your version of Windows is installed on the other computer."

    Joe: no help there
John: no, vista has the drivers for this printer

this is something was was completely easy in XP and Win2000, now in Vista it's something that requires a network engineer - not my idea of progress

Have a look at this article or this article . This method seems to have solved the problem for some.

Edited to add: This MS Newsgroup forum indicates the same solution.

Thanks John, I've filed that away. Also, I just got off the phone w/ Gateway - I bought a laptop with XP. I can get an upgrade disk and choose to upgrade someday if I want, but I'm sticking with XP. Let others be the guinea pigs for the new OS.
