troubleshoot audio problem

How do I troubleshoot an audio problem? Occasionally there is a constant hissing/buzzing from the speakers - how do I go about isolating this?

Does it stop if you mute from the screen volume control?
It sounds more like a bad connection. From the volume control, showing all inputs, try muting each input in turn which may isolate an input problem.
Otherwise, it may be the plugs to your speakers - just twiddling them can show up a dirty contact.

Okay - thanks! Now we're onto something - when I mute the Midi input the sound goes away. Do you know where I would go from here - since its not an actual physical input?

Well, I believe some soundcards do have midi inputs - often shared as a joystick port.
So, it could be a mechanical problem - otherwise, if you don't use it, just leave it muted.
Do you have a soundcard installed?

I do have a soundcard installed. This problem just started a little while ago - so I wasn't sure if there was a conflict, driver or something else. It does have a joystick port - but I don't use it. Will it affect anything when I record sounds?

I don't honestly know. I suspect that it may be a hardware problem - but where do you start? You could check things like the card is properly seated in its slot - even taking it out and refitting may help.
Make sure the screw fixing the card bracket to the chassis is secure.
Other than that, it may just be the age of the card .
Can you not just get away with leaving it muted?
