WinXP Pro SP2 (Ver 5.1)

I'll try to keep it short:

I was prompted that my C: drive was running low on space (I have 4 partitions each with approx. 20GB) and it was suggested that I should delete some files in order to obtain more space. I did not do this right away and then one day I was prompted that there was not even enough space to start my desktop ( I have 5 other users who have thier own desktops as well) BUT Windows was going to start a "default" desktop for me. I thought ok, when I'm finished with what I want to do, I'll get rid of some of those files on C:, get on with it and that all would be 'as it used to be' ----- NOT SO!
Not only do I NOT have a 'restore' point to go back in the system ( the only one showing on the calender was the day this happened) but I've lost my personal desktop as well and I just don't know what to do to restore it ----- that's my problem.
I have checked my 'restore' system calender and have almost one everyday since this occured (Jan. 29/07)

Help is requested from my fellow loungers>

Jason,
How much free space DO you have on the C: drive?
Did you clean out any unnecessary files at all or maybe you mistakenly deleted a vital file?

Possibly a Repair reinstall of XP is in order but try to give as much info as you can before you go this route.

Re: WinXP Pro SP2 (Ver 5.1)

If one gets warnings about "running low on space", one should better act directly as you now know. If for no other reason, one should do it since it can cause System Restore (SR) to stop (if one use SR or care about SR).

Even if it doesn't involve the main system drive, almost no free space on another partition that is monitored by System Restore can stop SR all across the system, <!post=as found by one in this thread, 479867>as found by one in this thread<!/post>.

At MS: The System Restore Utility May Be Suspended on a System Drive Even Though There Is Enough Disk Space

and System Restore "restore points" are missing or deleted

I quote:

The deletion of restore points may be caused by any one of the following by-design conditions:

You run out of disk space on the system drive or on any one of the available non-system drives, and System Restore stops responding and stops monitoring your system.

This behavior causes the system to delete all restore points in an attempt to free up disk space. However, you have probably already received a warning about running low in disk space prior to this point. In this case, when sufficient disk space is freed, System Restore starts to monitor the system again. At this point, it creates an automatic System Checkpoint.

So you probably have no luck in finding old Restore Points (RP's). What have you tried to do regarding space? TIF (temporary internet files), temp files, other cache folders, installed programs etc.

As Bob asked; space, how much do you have, and when talking System Restore, all monitored partitions are of interest (since a small/hidden, but monitored partition can stop SR).

P.S The subject doesn't give all that much info.

Bob/Argus
Well, I certainly had some reading to do;thanks to both of you!
I can NOW see how important it WAS for me to jump on the "lack of disc space" prompt immediately! Stupid of me to think that Microsoft would give me an opportunity to correct the problem at a later date.
Truthfully, most all of the space was being taken up by my children and their videos, pictures, and music. I simply moved ALL of those files to a partition that has 20GB of space--they can run the stuff from there.

What an experience this has been. I thank all the members who also viewed my post!
Now maybe I can get on with life 'in the fast lane'!
