Re using XP upgrade disk (XP)

Recently, I purchased a new computer and as such now have a surplus XP upgrade disk. As the old computer has now been stripped of components, I am wondering if it is possible to use the upgrade disk on another unit. I'm concerned about activation once I install the XP upgrade on a different computer.

    Thanks.

If it is a retail upgrade disc you should be fine. The only thing you may have to do is call Microsoft if the activation fails. If you do just tell them the old PC is decommissioned and they should give you an activation key over the phone.

Thanks. So what would happen if I just installed the hard drive with the XP on it into a different cpu?

You'd have all kinds of problems because the registry, drivers, and support files (HAL.DLL etc) will be different. More than likely, it will start up and give you an error reading "inaccessible boot device" or similar.

You're far better off to start with a clean install, booting from the CD and taking it from there.

I agree with Mark. You are much better off with a clean install. If need data off the old system copy it somewhere or back it up with a third part solution (not the Windows backup). After the install you should be able to just copy it or restore it to the new system.

Thanks for the responses. Nothing on the old drive that I need so I will just do a fresh install and go from there.
