Auto nos. - just plain! (Word 2003)

It sounds crazy but I cannot figure out how to get auto nos. that have no additional characters or formatting (i.e., no tab following, no period or parenthesis following, nothing but the plain number itself!).

I need it for the first column of a Table.

Back when I used Word 2000 at another firm, it seems to me that under Bullets and Numbering, when you customized your numbers, there was a "None" option under the Tab field. But in Word 2003, there is no such option. The best you can do is set the Tab to zero, but you still get a tab, which messes up the position of the number in the column.

And I can't find any Field codes that don't include a period or parenthesis.

    Can someone help?

Can you use an SEQ field? See Field codes: Seq (Sequence) field - Word - Microsoft Office Online at Microsoft.com, or your locally installed help file for more information.

Thanks, I'll take another look. I tried it earlier but kept getting an "Error! No sequence specified" message. Couldn't figure out what I was doing wrong.
