    Outlook 2007 files & settings (2007)

My bride and I are awaiting receipt of our new DELL computers (desktop & laptop) which will have Office Professional 2007 installed. We are currently using OL 2002. We're kind of on pins and needles right now because Office 2007 is so new but we had to make a switch because our current system is so old.

I'm looking to find out what files I need to transfer or export/import from our OL 2002 to OL 2007 to ensure we have our e-mail messages and settings intact on the new system. Will data migration software handle that for us (I'm looking at the Laplink software because it reportedly will work with our old system's Windows 98 SE O/S) or do we need to get the files saved to CD for later transfer? Would anyone happen to know if the files are located in the same folder/sub-folders of OL 2007 or not?

Microsoft often publishes articles on what files to migrate; I don't know whether there is such an article for Office 2007 yet. (I should search, but it's late...)

As you may know, starting in Outlook 2003 the file format changed to accommodate much more data. Accordingly, I think you should plan on importing or dragging/dropping your existing Outlook items into a brand new PST file. Therefore, the new file locations would not be very important. But having an extra backup would be helpful. <img src=/S/smile.gif border=0 alt=smile width=15 height=15>

I've read some good things about Windows Vista: Windows Easy Transfer.

Thank you very much for the info. We performed the import/export with nary a problem. Now all I have to do is organize the "spaghetti" under our desk.

I was all set to try that feature in Vista until I read that it would not work with my old Win98SE system. To add insult to injury, the data migration software I elected to use for the job (Detto IntelliMover) also was not compatible with Win98 despite something I read in the product promo to the contrary. We subsequently wound up using an ethernet connection between the two boxes to make the transfers. Took a bit of time BUT not near as long as the back & forth would have taken using CD or USB flash drive. I'm going to take the slave drive out of the old system, put it in an enclosure fitted with USB 2.0 & Firewire connections, and use it as a portable drive for future use/transfers.
