XP & Norton Security (Home SP2)

I'm trying to help a friend setup a DSL connection on his new computer. It wouldn't recognize the modem. Upon informing AT&T that Norton Security 2006 was installed they advised to right click on the desktop icon and click on an option to disable Norton. However, there was no such option available! So I thought "no problem." I'll just uninstall Norton and install AVG. When I tried to uninstall Norton it came up with a message indicating that I needed start it up and log in before it would uninstall. I then went to the Start menu and attempted to start Norton up. Part of the initial screen came up and then it hung! So, I can't start it, thus I can't uninstall it either! This is only one of the reasons that I avoid Norton like a plague.

Any suggestion on how to get it uninstalled?
