Outlook sluggish and hangs (2002)

Every so often, Outlook hangs and I end up doing an End task through Taskmanager. The last couple of times, it has come back with the helpful message below from Microsoft. Any ideas where to start looking?

A while ago I created a new profile as things had become very sluggish, and this helped enormously. Before, running ZA Email Protection would bring OL to its knees within a few hours, now it lasts a whole day before slowing everything down. (Taskmanager reports memory usage at around 30MB without ZA, and around 60-70MB with.) I generally run it now without ZA and it seems to have no direct effect on the hanging issue.

I've run Scanpst several times and it always reports a 'few discrepancies' which I allow it to fix, but there is never any improvement.

I'm running about 17 rules, and have about 100 mail folders. Pst size is around 600MB.

TIA

It's not clear whether the dialog says there are Office Updates available or whether this is a generic message displayed even if you are fully patched up.

My guess is generic as I've got all the downloads/updates available.

At least it has stopped blaming it on a (non-existent) installation of Winfax which it used to do

There's a lot of articles in repsonse to Search The Knowledge Base - Outlook 2002 slow. Is your issue just a general slowdown, opening mail, sending mail, ????

Thanks Joe - been there, done that...

There is no consistency. It'll be working fine, then after 4-5 hours odd things will happen like I can't move mail items into another folder, or I'll have had 3-4 messages open for a while and it just locks up and I can't switch between them.

I was rather hoping someone would say 'Never have more than 96 mail folders' or 'Don't have multiple sub-folders' or 'ZA mail protection does this'

I'll try switching off all my rules and reducing the number of mail folders then gradually introduce them again and see if I can catch something. This could take several weeks...

What does Task Manager show when this happens? Do you have any addins that could be disabled or uninstalled?

Taskmanager says 'Not responding', and the only addin is the Backup one, which post-dates the problem...

100 folders does not sound a too excessive. However i do recall a problem I had with one user, where we discovered that he was adding a new folder for every day a freight quote was received. After a while the levels of folders under the main Freight folder became so great that they caused a problem, although the mailbox size was not at all large. Although I doubt this happens in your case, I thought it worth mentioning.

Interesting thought, thanks, but no more than two deep here. I may try archiving off some lesser-used ones for a while though...

No extreme CPU usage? Network issue? Is this standalone or Exchange? Other than Outlook does everything else run OK when Outlook starts to slow down?

Re: Outlook sluggish and hangs (2002)

Hmmm... from memory:
CPU usage - Outlook is using more than normal - I'll check the next time.
Network? - unlikely as everything else seems OK and my LAN icon indicator in the Systray seems normal.
Local pst, using MDaemon mail server on our server (like Exchange, except far superior!)

So far today - now with all rules turned off - it seems to be running OK...

No one here ever complained about Outlook 2002 and rules. If turning off rules appears to fix it, maybe some other Outlook addin is conflicting with rules somehow.

Re: Outlook sluggish and hangs (2002)

Have you read my post Outlook Hangs? We may have a similar problem, although I am using Outlook 2003. (I am suspicious of ZoneAlarm Internet Security Suite version 6.5.737 which I am using.) Take a look at Event Viewer (Control Panel - Administrative Tools) and see if you have any Application Errors similar to mine.

Re: Outlook sluggish and hangs (2002)

Typically, it's running OK now. I should have posted this problem months ago - I will check the event viewer if it happens ago though, thanks for the tip.

I'm going to try turning the junk filter of ZA back on and see what happens. (I don't use the other mail protection as that should be covered by the mail-server.)
