Excel Autofill (Offoce 2003/SP2)

If you wish to AutoFill a sequence of numbers or dates with an increment value other than 1, then you must input at least the first two values in the series. The difference between the two initial cells determines how the series should be linearly increased or decreased.

I take this statement from Woody's Office For Mere Mortals to mean that I should be able to put a number 1 in a cell, drag the handle, and have it automatically count by 1 to any number I want or until I run out of space in that column or row. This is not the case. If I put a 1 and drag it repeats the 1 until I stop dragging. They further demonstrate that if you wanted the number to increment by 2 instead of 1 then you must enter 1 and then 3. Incrementing by 2 works as they say but entering only a 1 and expecting it to increase its increment by 1 in subsequence cells does not work

Is this how it works for others? If not, do I have something wrong in my setup of Excel?

The statement in OMM is ambiguous, it should be read as

If you wish to AutoFill a sequence of numbers or (dates with an increment value other than 1), then ...

So if you want to fill a sequence of numbers, you must *always* enter the first two values, even if the increment is 1.

Thanks Hans that is what I thought. What became confusing was the article also sited an example about incrementing months. That worked just by entering January and dragging it filled in all the other months. So I thought maybe they knew what they were saying however, as we know that didn't work with numbers.

    Again, thanks

You can also right-click and drag the handle, then you get options as to what to do.
