    PC stops and starts

I occasionally have a situation where my PC stops working for about 3-4 seconds, then starts again for about 7-10 seconds then stops, starts, etc, etc. This continues until I restart the machine and then everything works fine again.

The most obvious symptom is that the cursor stops responding when the PC is in the stop mode even though I am still moving the mouse.

I am using a Compaq Deskpro EN with Windows 98. I normally have Outlook 2000, a couple of Word 2000 and IE5.5 open.

I have not noticed any pattern with this problem occurring, however, it does happen a few times a week.

Can you think of anything that would cause this?

My usual first question, do you regularly defrag your HDD?

Also try a search in this thread, subject has been brought up on a number of occasions.

Let us know how you go, and if you require any further assistance.

    Thanks for the quick response!

I have had a look through the Lounge and read thread # 51854. I have 128MB RAM, so it seems that this should not be an issue and I tried everything in the thread other than changing virtual memory settings, however, the problem is still occurring.

I will do a defrag to see if that makes any difference.

    Thanks.

This sounds like some cpu bound background task is intermittently taking over and stopping mouse interrupts from being serviced.
