    Opening files (2003)

Hi, on 1 PC in the network I have a problem opening files like .doc and .xls.
When I open them in Word or Excel directly, they are there instantly.
Opening them through Explorer takes a minute or longer.
This behavior doesn't occur with the same files or other PC's in this network.
Same type of PC, same version of Word/Excel.
    Any guesses?

Are the files you are trying to open on a (shared) network drive? If so, is the drive mapped? - again if so, it may be worth deleting and remapping the drive.

    Tnx Leif,
They are on a SBS-server. And yes, the drive is mapped.
Remapping is not in the picture because all others work fine with the same files.
And opening seems related to Explorer. In Word e.g. it opens like a charm.

I think Leif meant use Windows Explorer to "Disconnect Network Drive" and then "Map Network Drive" on the troublesome PC not actually delete anything on the server.

yeah, sure, was too quick with my answer, sorry about that, Leif.
But why don't I have problems with opening the file in Word itself.
The same problem exists, although a little less, when I copy the file to the local harddisk.
And there's no mapping of course.
    Try again, please.

Check some of the threads from network files open slowly - Google Search. This one Slow file open / right click menu had several different suggestions one which helped one of the posters was re-create the user account.

Several suggestions? 14,300,000 you mean. Can't handle that.
Besides it doesn't point out why it only happens opening through Explorer and not from within Word.
    Tnx anyway

Are there any different addins or macros running the slow machine and NOT on the others?

How long does it take to just open Word on the slow machine compared to the others?

Now running HP Pavilion a6528p, with Win7 64 Bit OS.

No, nothing. Out of the box installation. And patched up-to-date. Not just Word but Excel too.

You didn't answer Dave's second question: how long does it take to start Word by itself (or Excel, for that matter)?

And is there a difference between the time it takes to open a Word document from Windows Explorer when Word is already running and when it isn't?

    Re: Opening files (2003)

    Sorry hoor, Hans.
    3 Seconds.
And that's exact the problem I started with:
Word open: 2 seconds for the file.
From Explorer: 30 or more seconds for the same file, local or network.

Is this the same network on which you are having SMTP issues (thread starts with <post:=630,805>post 630,805</post:>)?

    Re: Opening files (2003)

It's still not 100% clear to me.

    <table border=1><td>Action</td><td>Time (seconds)</td><td>Start Word</td><td align=right>3</td><td>Open document from within Word</td><td align=right>2</td><td>Open document from Explorer, Word already running</td><td align=right>?</td><td>Open document from Explorer, Word not yet active</td><td align=right>?</td></table>
Should *both* question marks be "30 or more"?

This might help. DO NOT click on "View Solution". Simply scroll down the page and look at the "Accepted Answer".

    Re: Opening files (2003)

To rule out problems with Word and Excel startup, make sure both applications are already open when you test the time in Windows Explorer.

If Windows Explorer still is very slow, it could be security software is scanning the entire network folder on access. Usually that can be turned off.
