    crcdisk (Vista Ultimate)

I am trying to do an upgrade from XP to Vista Ultimate. The upgrade process starts but after a while hangs at a black screen with a green "progress" bar and Microsoft copyright logo. If I try to do a Safe start then the list of drivers loaded stops after crcdisk.sys. I was able to return to my previous version of Windows, with apparently no ill effects. Any suggestions as to what might cause this problem and how I can fix it?

See if this helps: Solution for crcdisk error

You can also look at these: Google results.

When doing an "upgrade" installation of Vista you have to be VERY sure that your hardware and drivers are compatible. Also, you may need to uninstall any program that normally boots on startup and writes to disc, e.g,. antivirus programs or any program that monitors changes on the HDD. Some you can set in their options to not run when Windows starts and remove/disable any automatic scheduled utilites as well. During the upgrade your system will be required to reboot several times automatically so keep that in mind.

Have you run the " Download Windows Vista Upgrade Advisor as it will tell you what hardware and software that will give you heartburn?

Now running HP Pavilion a6528p, with Win7 64 Bit OS.
