Problem changing margins and paper size

I have a document with user-defined pages 42 cm wide, too wide to print comfortably. Luckily the inside margin is also very wide, 22.3 cm. I would like to reduce both by the same amount, say by 20 cm. The printed area should just be shifted, but shouldnt change, should it?

The page setup menu in Word 97 (with service pack 2 installed), however, does not seem to want to accept any changes at all. The error message says (roughly translated) the margins, columns, spaces between columns or paragraph indentation in some sections are too large (yes, I specified "whole document", not "current section"). It has only one button, "OK". Any suggestions?

Re: Problem changing margins and paper size

I found a solution: store the file as RTF and then reedit as TXT. Changing /paperw and /margl values did what I needed.

I think the problem here is that you needed to change the 22.3cm margin first, then adjust the page size.
