Recommendations for Web Host (2002)

Hi,

I've got a website built in Frontpage that has been hosted by Interland.com, now web.com. Since the change in ownership, customer / tech support has been the pits. There is no one live to talk to and everything is done through tickets. I uploaded changes to the website last night and ever since the web doesn't load. I've yet to hear back from tech support. I'm ready to move on and would prefer to do so to a site where there is known good customer service. This web page doesn't need to do anything special. It's basically used for inforamtion, to allow the viewer to download brochures, email, and to show a 2 minute mpeg video file. It isn't used for sales or anthying like that.

Thanks,
Leesha

I have been using 1and1.com and have not had any problems.

Now running HP Pavilion a6528p, with Win7 64 Bit OS.

Thanks for the info. I'm assuming from what I read that I can upload my frontpage web to this host?

Yes, 1and1 allows you to choose between FTP access and FrontPage extensions (to publish directly to the site from FrontPage). This is definitely available in the MS Hosting packages based on Windows. Didn't check with the Linux hosting packages. If it doesn't work and the support doesn't resolve it, I believe you can cancel for a full refund during the first month.

This is probably a very stupid question, but I've only used ftp with web.com. Are Frontpage extensions perferable over FTP especially when wanting to get get to the access tables that are gather data?

Thanks,

I don't think it's a stupid question, and unfortunately I don't know the answer. Presumably FrontPage is smart enough not to overwrite the updated database files. But unless they have added a two-way synchronization option, it would take two steps: publish local web to the remote server; open the remote web and download to the local. (Sorry, I never upgraded past FP2000).

I don't know how it is in 2000 but in 2002, when you "publish the web" from FP, you have the option to replace all files or only replace ones with changes. It's really pretty easy, unless it blows up by the host, which is what happened to me with web.com/interland.

Hi Leesha

This type of question is always difficult to answer as everyone has different experiences. I have had nothing but problems recently with my host. Small things like I have not been able to see my logs for the past 4 months via the interface they provide. I email the service desk and get no answer, I eventually got an answer and they (wrongly) state that I changed my service contract .

I have given upon them as I only have a very basic account with them and have decided to go it alone using the tools and open source applications, FileZilla for FTP and a Google AdSense and Analytics. I download my logs via FTP and do my own analysis.

Personally, I find the FTP aspects of FP and Dreameaver seriously lacking and in the latter, I have never seen a professional use the function preferring network folder access for file dumping. My view is get the web space you require and go it alone.

Re: Recommendations for Web Host (2002)

You probably have found a satisfactory solution, but I have 2 options:

1. www.siteground.com has the least expensive (linux) hosting with the most options and good support, although it is mostly e-mail. They suppot FrontPage extensions.
2. www.etgroup.net has VERY reasonable 100% windows hosting and they are small enough I can talk to real people when I need anything. They are AWESOME!

(Usual disclaimer, I am not associated with either company other than a customer, etc., etc., etc.)
