Silverback,

1.Run a complete and thorough virus check with latest updates for the AV.

2.Do a complete malware check with AdAware and Spybot S&D or SpySweeper.

3.Do a Repair install of XP and SP2 with all the latest hotfixes.

Might be a lot of work but probably better than trying various "fixes", etc.

I'd agree with Bob. First step is the AV, then spyware/malware and then the repair installation to fix anything the bugs corrupted.

Thank you, Bob and Doc
We've got OE working and the keyboard is back to English (UK).
I did not know about the ability to perform a repair installation (I'm a W2K man myself) so when I get over there again, I'll do that.
I'll post back when that's been done to let loungers know how it went.
Thanks again

Re: Registry corruption? (Windows XP SP2)

Bob, Doc
Hmmm. Since I last posted about this issue (still haven't got to relative's place to perform this repair installation) I've bought a Dell computer. I took the opportunity to go broadband with this machine and installed wireless broadband. Everything seems to be OK. However, I have some digital map software (Anquet) which works perfectly ie communicates with my GPS to download and upload routes on my old PC (W2K). For the life of me, I can't get it to communicate with the GPS on the Dell. So I thought I'd do a system restore to before I installed the maps, reinstall the GPS drivers and then try the mapping software again. But the system won't restore! It comes back and reports Restoration Incomplete - nothing changed, try another restore point. So i've gone back throught the restore points and nothing works. I have not gone back to before I installed the wireless software because, frankly, I'm scared that the whole system will come to a halt - and I now don't have any other means of internet/email.
The mapping software does not say it cannot communicate with the GPS - it says there are no COM ports or connected USB devices on the machine which seems to me to be a more fundamental problem than having seen the GPS but not being able to talk to it. But why can't I restore? I really don't speak Windows XP (my exposure to this is only a few weeks); I run AVG antivirus and AdAware regularly on the PC with nothing found; is your advice to perform a Repair installation of XP as you did for my relative?
Thanks

Re: Registry corruption? (Windows XP SP2)

Silverback,
Is this the first time you have tried to use System Restore on this computer?
Do you have AT LEAST 200MB of free disk space on the HD?
If you click on Control Panel>Administrative Tools>Services, look at this list of Services and make sure these are enabled and running:
System Restore
Windows management Instrumentation ( WMI )
Task Scheduler

While in the Amin tools area, click on Event Viewer> System and look for any errors with SR or system restore mentioned. If DO see any, right click on it and see what the event log says about the error.

I would try for the Restore Point before you installed the wireless software. SR is reversible or if incomplete it will not change anything ( as you have found out )

COM Ports and USB:
Since I don't have a Dell machine I'm not sure just how Dell lets you get into the BIOS, but generally, if you reboot and while the initial screen is showing, you repeatedly hit DEL, F1 or F2, ( use all three ) you should get into the machine BIOS.
Once there look at the various screens for mention of USB or COM ports. Make sure they are enabled.

All else failed, Then do a REPAIR install using the Dell Recovery CD. You should have instructions in the Dell manual on how to do this.

Make sure you carefully check these items and report back. ( hopefully with success )

Re: Registry corruption? (Windows XP SP2)

Oh boy have I been having fun. Not sure if the marriage has survived this!
1. Yes - it's the first time I tried System Restore. I do have masses of space on the disc (250Gb disc, new machine)
2. All tasks running
3. No event log messages
4. System Restore would not work. I could not restore to any of the checkpoints.
5. Nowhere near looking at the maps/GPS issue yet.
6. This morning, found that the Wireless Network had disappeared completely. I DO NOT KNOW HOW THIS HAPPENED. HONEST! Eventually, after flailing around a lot (uninstalling/reinstalling software only to have it say it could not talk to the wireless modem) I managed to get it going.
The system is back up and running now, I have forced a system checkpoint and successfully restored to this point, so I am going to leave well alone now. I have internet and email access over wireless broadband. Tomorrow, I might look at the maps and GPS issue. But then again, I might not.
It's a lot to take on board with a new machine, new operating system, new method of communication etc. At my age, all I want to do is lie down.
Many thanks for your help Viking - when I do get over to the relative's place, I will try this here repair installation. In the meantime, thanks a million; I don't know what I'd do without you and other loungers who give their expertise so freely.

Silverback,
You are welcome!
Looks like you are back in business? I suppose you experienced a SWH. ( Something wonderful happened )

Or after all, maybe your new system was playing an April Fools Joke on you? Today is the day you know.

So relax, kick back and enjoy.
