Gaps in table borders (Office 2003)

I have a table in Word which has four columns. In the last row, three of the columns are split horizontally. This has caused gaps to appear in the bottom border. At first I thought it was a screen display artifact but the gaps survive conversion to PDF and printing from both Word and Acrobat.

The only way I can get rid of the gaps is to split the whole row. I don't want to do that because I want text to wrap properly in the un-split column.

Does anyone know how to fix this ?

    Hi Garry,

I can't see any problem with either version of the table using Word 2000. Is your copy of Word 2003 fully patched with all the latest MS updates?

I left on the table gridlines in the example file. I can see the three tiny gaps only when gridlines are turned off. I've proved it by converting to PDF. See the attached. Open the PDF file in Acrobat Reader and set zoom to 300%

I don't know if it happens in Word 2000 - I suspect it does. I think we have all the Office 2003 patches.

I see the gaps in Word 2002 and 2003. It appears to be a bug in the way Word treats borders in merged cells. A workaround is to add another row to the table (with unmerged cells) and to specify the top border of this row instead of the bottom border of the problem row. I gave the extra row a height of 0.02", so that it is hardly noticeable.

    See the attached version.

    Hans,

Many thanks. That will work for me.
