Is it possible to "clean" a CD ROM DRIVE. I have an older system that sometimes reads the disk and sometimes not.

Sure, you can buy cleaning CDs at almost any electronic or audio store. They basically have a small brush on the CD which cleans the optics. Other cleaning techniques run the risk of leaving a deposit on the laser which rends the CD unusable.
