    Personalising a toolbar (Office 2003)

    Can anyone help?

I have a toolbar that is created programmatically in PowerPoint. I would like to place a logo at the beginning of the toolbar to identify it as a company toolbar. Is it possible to insert a logo rather than a Face ID number?

    Thanks
    Jack

You can use the PasteFace method of the CommandBarButton object, or you can set its Picture property. The built-in help has some examples.

    Hi Hans

Quick question, if you can help !! I would like to include a company logo on a toolbar, you pointed me in the right direction with the Picture property. I still have an issue though - I have been given two files a png and a jpg but am having problems using these as the picture. I have opened both files and renamed them to a bmp file, just in case but still no joy. The icon appears squashed and illegible.

    Any ideas?

    Thanks
    Jack

The ideal situation is to have a logo that is already 16x16 pixels, otherwise it'll have to be resized and that usually results in loss of quality.

Re: Personalising a toolbar (Office 2003)

Ah .... now it's making sense why the logo appears to be squashed (the logo is being populated in a 16x16 pixel space). Is it possible to increase the space so that I can populate the whole logo correctly or does this have to stay at 16x16?

    Thanks
    Jack

Re: Personalising a toolbar (Office 2003)

The user can choose between small icons (16x16, the default) and large icons (32x32) in the Options tab of Tools | Customize... But this is a user preference that you shouldn't change just to fit your logo. See if you (or, if you're graphically challenged, like I am, someone else who is good at graphics) can design a version of the logo that looks good at 16x16 pixels. Don't try to include all the detail, concentrate on getting the general impression across.

Further to what Hans said, if the logo includes text (which can be very hard to read), you might consider an image-only version of the logo and add the text to the caption of the button. You can display the button with text and image simultaneously.

Re: Personalising a toolbar (Office 2003)

Many thanks for the suggestion Rory. To be honest I do need a clear image of the logo and I have a strong feeling that the Branding Team would not want the image impacted in anyway. Looks like the answer I will have to give them is "no" it cannot be done if you do not want to impact the image.

    Cheers

A muddy reduced version of the logo is definitely not a good idea. If a version of the logo specially designed to look as good as possible in 16x16 is not acceptable, it's best to forego the use of the logo altogether.

Re: Personalising a toolbar (Office 2003)

I've been thinking, which is quite scary !! If I'm unable to place the logo on the toolbar is it possible to change the colour of the toolbar? The toolbar is built programmatically when the application loads but I cannot see a way of changing the specific colour of the toolbar. Is there a way of doing this? (I'm not holding my breath on this one !!)

    Cheers

No, the color of a toolbar is determined by the user's color scheme for Windows.

How about a text-only button on the toolbar with the company name? This button could open a userform with the full-size company logo, copyright info etc.

Good idea but they were hoping for the brand to be visible on the toolbar to draw attention to it. At times it is very difficult to bring technology and branding together !!

    Cheers
