Quotes replacement - slant vs. straight (All)

    Hi

I have problem where in a document two types of 'quotes' are used. I also don't understand how two types quotes come into affect? I need to replace the "slanted quotes" with "straight quotes". The global replace function does not do the job. I selected the slanted quote as find and straight quote as replace. The replacement looks exactly the same? Don't understand. If I select a slanted quote and paste straight quote on top of it - it works (slanted quote is replaced with a straight quote). Ok. I am totally confused. Any ideas why this the case?

The reason for the change: the slanted quotes do not transfer well into Unix and replaced with question marks.

    Can somebody help please? Thanks.

    1. Select Tools | AutoCorrect Options...
Activate the AutoFormat As You Type tab.
Clear the check box labeled "Straight quotes" with "smart quotes".
    Click OK.
This will prevent Word from converting straight quotes to slanted quotes automatically from now on.

    2. Select an opening slanted quote and copy it to the clipboard.
Select Edit | Replace, and paste the slanted quote into the 'Find what' box.
Type a straight quote into the 'Replace with' box.
    Click 'Replace All'.
Repeat for the closing slanted quote.

    Hans - you da man. Thanks. <img src=/S/clapping.gif border=0 alt=clapping width=19 height=23>

Deceptively simple once you know how. So everytime I was using replace - the default Autocorrect entry was replacing the 'replaced slanted quotes with straight quotes & then auto correcting it with the slanted quotes'. HaHaHa....

    Thanks once again Hans. Don't know what the lounge would do without you. <img src=/S/cheers.gif border=0 alt=cheers width=30 height=16> <img src=/S/thankyou.gif border=0 alt=thankyou width=40 height=15>
