    Strange Vista printer problem:( (vista)

<img src=/S/bash.gif border=0 alt=bash width=35 height=39> Hi everyone, I just did a clean install of Vista premium a couple of days ago and I was suprised how well the install went. O.S., no problem, drivers n.p., apps. n.p. That was until I tried to reinstall my new printer. The printer is only a week old "Epson stylus DX 5050 all-in-one" and I installed it w/ XP last week and it worked great. Then I reformatted and installed Vista on the same P.C. The disk that came with the printer installed everything and the computer said it recognized it. In the printers folder it showed up as ready, default printer. Everything looked correct until I tried to print. The software that comes with the printer puts a icon in the tray that you can click to check the printer status, ink level, setting, etc. When I first opened this before trying to print it showed 4 coloured ink boxes to show the levels and all was well. As soon as I tried to print, it pops this box back up and shows that the page is loading until it gets about half way and then all the colours go away and it just stays that way, the printer sitting like it never recieved anthing. Also when I pressed print another printer symbol pops up in the tray to show the printer job. I click on this and it opens up the printer explorer and shows my printer. if I click on that it show the document I am trying to print, says"printing" but it just sits there for about 4 minutes until it finally starts saying "error" and the epson box says "error" check connections, etc. If I try to cancel the document it just hangs, and when I turn off the printer and turn it back on it sometimes will print half a page and stop showing"error again, or It will pop up a tray icon saying usb device not recognized. W.T.F? I have un-installed and re-installed the Epson software twice and it still does the same thing. In 20 tries of opening, closing, on and offing I was able to get only one page to print. I tried to install the new drivers from Epson but it doesn't seem to help. Do you have to un-install old printer drivers first? PLEASE! If anyone could help me it would be Mega-appreciated. Before I destroy something!!
    Thnks, Sean

Does the disk that came with the printer have XP drivers or Vista drivers? I see from your profile that you are located in Germany. Are these the "new" Epson drivers you tried to install? I would certainly uninstall the old software prior to installing the new software. Also, check the order of installation (your owner's manual should indicate this). Many times the software must be installed first, and then the device is connected.

The disk that came with it only had the Xp driver and it popped up an error once while installing. I downloaded and tried both of the drivers from the same site as the link you have. When I first intalled it I followed the manual to the tee(software, connect). It showed everything installed but then went bad when I actually tried to print. Would UAC or firewall effect a USB printer? Where would I actually uninstall the earlier driver?
    Thanks.

A firewall shouldn't affect a printer. I don't have Vista as yet, but in XP, you would remove the earlier printer software from the "Add/Remove Programs" section of the Control Panel, and you would delete the printer completely from the "Printers & Faxes" section of the Control Panel. I'm sure Vista has either the same or very similar options. As for UAC, you may have to use the "run as administrator" option to install the new printer software. Someone who is currently running Vista would be able to answer this.

The best thing to do is to "Run as Administrator" on any device type of install.
One may need to "bypass" any menu that pops up with the autostart, and select the "setup" files and right click and the select "Run As Administrator".

Thanks for the response Dave. As a point of interest, do the new "approved for Vista" applications grab the appropriate permissions first, or would the safest route be to simply bypass the autorun for the installation of any application or device?

The "Approved for Vista" program or device installer should kick the UAC in and you would get the proper UAC pop ups. So the "Auto runs" should work just fine.

One word of caution, several of the UAC pop ups are "pop unders" and are sitting there waiting for one to click OK, when you close the top windows. <img src=/S/evilgrin.gif border=0 alt=evilgrin width=15 height=15>. I have not seen this as often on the RTM version or the OEM version installed on the wife's laptop as I did on the later Beta builds.
