    Lost Email (Outlook 2007)

    Hi Everyone,
A couple of weeks ago I switched from Office XP to Office 2007. Generally things are going well. However, some strange behavior has begun to develop with Outlook 2007. I have the habit of previewing my email on the ISP's Webmail service and deleting all of the junk; I just don't want it on my PC. I then close the browser and open Outlook and download the email. I've done this for years. Lately Outlook 2007 has been doing the download but the email is nowhere to be seen. I've looked in all of the folders that are in Outlook and I don't see the email. The email is definitely removed from the Inbox at the ISP. The funny thing is that if I'm downloading, for example 6 emails, 2 may come through while the others go into the vapor.

This is a mysterious and troubling situation that I've never encountered before. I'm wondering if anyone else has seen this and perhaps knows of a solution or at least how best to report this to Microsoft..

Thanks a lot for any thoughts.

Common ways that mail disappears from the Inbox include the Junk folder (if Outlook's built-in filter is being too aggressive), rules that sort mail into folders, and the view for "Unread messages only." The latter doesn't sound applicable. Do either of the first two seem to be relevant?

    Thank you for your reply.
There is no mail in the Junk Mail folder. I checked the rules under junk mail following your lead and the following are checked: "No Automatic Filtering......." There are no listings in the Safe Senders, Safe Recipients, Blocked Senders or International. I'm wondering if perhaps I should add lists to the Safe Senders for a bunch that are important. A format such as " *@domain.com " should work, I would think. But with the settings as they currently are I would not expect Outlook to dump the email. I really wonder if there is something else afoot....

Sorry I was a bit ambiguous about "rules." I meant the kind listed under Tools>Rules and Alerts (formerly known as the Rules Wizard). But perhaps you didn't carry any over in your conversion.

    Re: Lost Email (Outlook 2007)

Thanks for the clarification. I took a look at the Rules Wizard and sure enough were a couple of entries. One looked like a default put there by Outlook. The other was one I'd forgotten about from 2 or 3 years ago that pertained to Fortune Magazine (?). Anyway, I deleted them both. I still wonder why the messages just completely disappeared, but I'll keep a lookout regarding Outlook's behavior and see if there is a difference. I had begun to wonder if I might have a virus or something, but my scanner says "no".

Thank you very much for your suggestions. Most sincerely appreciated!

If you are using a security suite with spam filtering, you should check there too.

Finally, you could experiment with search folders. You can check any that have global scope, such as Unread Items, or define your own. The idea would be to discover whether any mail items are lurking in unexpected places.
