opening new document opens a minimized document (Word 2000)

I have a computer running Windows XP, Word 2000 with this issue. When I open a word document and minimize it, and then open a second word document, the minimized document opens up as well as the new document. Any ideas how to get it to not do that?

I've experienced the same thing with Office XP and Office 2003. It's as though the last-used application window is activated first, and then the new document loads. Not sure there is a solution for this.
