and welcome to the Lounge!
A question? Who manufactures the IMA 946 printer? I am curious because I "googled" for it and didn't turn up a company name.

Have you downloaded the lastest driver for this printer? While I looking on the Dell website, I was intrigued that there is a page that checks your system configuration, etc. listed under the tab called Technical Support Tools in the middle of the page. Would this help you in any way? Or have you already checked out the Dell site and still have no joy trying to solve your problem?

According to Dell,

"If your printer does not function properly, or communication error messages appear when using your printer, you can remove and reinstall the printer software.
1. Click Start > Programs or All Programs > Dell Printers > Dell AIO Printer 946.
2. Select Uninstall Dell AIO Printer 946.
3. Follow the instructions on the computer screen.
4. Restart your computer.
5. Insert the Drivers and Utilities CD, and then follow the instructions on the screen.
If the installation screen does not appear:
a. In Windows XP, click Start > My Computer.
(In Windows 2000, double-click My Computer from your desktop.)
b. Double-click the CD-ROM drive icon, and then double-click setup.exe.
c. When the printer software installation screen appears, click Personal Installation or Network Installation.
d. Follow the instructions on your screen to complete the installation."

If you do not have a CD, unzip R145315.exe file you downloaded to a separate folder and run Setup.exe from there instead.
Make sure you fully uninstall previous (unsuccessful) installation of Dell 946 Printer software.

You might want to try a repair of Windows. Boot with the CD, follow the prompts, and select the repair option. It would also be a good idea to run a thorough disk check (CHKDSK /R) to eliminate any possible corruption on your hard drive.

If you have any other symptoms or problems, even if they do not seem related, make sure that you add those details here. In my experience a problem such as the one you describe is an indicator of other, deeper problems.

Sometimes it takes more than just removing the drivers.

Did you follow the exact instructions laid out by kaplinb in <post#=632941>post 632941</post#> ?

It is better to remove all software associated with your printer. Detach the cables connecting your printer to the computer and re-install all the software and drivers. A reboot may be necessary. Once the software and drivers have been successfully installed, reconnect your printer via the USB cables to the computer. That process should recognize the device. Just follow screen prompts from there.

Hopefully that will get you up and running.

Cheers, Bob
