Thunderbird Attachments (IE 7.0 )

I was setting Options and on the Attachment tab I saw something about saving attachments. I wondered why they had to be saved in the first place? Suppose I didn't want them saved (there's no option not to save)? If they have to be saved, would the desktop be the best place to save them? Once saved, I will delete them because I see no use in keeping them.

Your post says Thunderbird, but you have IE 7 in parens and I don't know why. If you ARE talking about Thunderbird, I have my option on that page set to "...always ask me..." rather than "...always save to..."

When I get an email with an attachment, nothing happens automatically and the attachments STAY attached to the email. If I should choose to save to my hard drive outside the email, I right-click and go through the usual Save As screen to choose a location for the file. Works for me.

Now, as a postscript, you might remember from other threads that I use MailWasher Pro as my front-end email evaluator, BEFORE I ever accept an email from my ISP's server. I NEVER, EVER accept emails with .exe or other "dangerous" attachments, even from someone I know, for they could inadvertently be passing something bad on to me. Most of the time the few attachments I get will be pix from a friend or family member or a pdf file, or something else that's relatively safe. Even then, I always hope and pray that my antivirus scanner (currently free Avast) will warn me if something bad is arriving.

I don't know why either, beats the heck out of me. If I have to save attachments, I have to save attachments, but I still don't understand why.

I also use Mail Washer Pro and look at every email it loads before it's allowed to download into OE or Thunderbird.

As I said, in my scenario, you don't have to save attachments unless you want the file to be available on your drive outside the email. The attachments should reside in the email for as long as you keep the email.
