Reducing GIF size

I recently found a cute animated GIF that I liked and wanted to add to my WOPR profile.

It is an animated Fox moving his tail back and forth. This is appropriate since we live on Sly Fox Court and my car license is SLYFOXS. Had to spend the money of specialized plates some how.

Anyway, tried to load it but found there was a 5 Kb limit and it was at 38.1 Kb. I Googled several sites and downloaded trail software for ReaCompression V1.8 and Advanced GIF Optimizer.

The first program, by changing from 256 colors to 64 reduced the file size to 4.5 Kb. The only problem is now the GIF is an image and not animated.
The second program only reduced it to about 12 Kb. and the test view showed multi tails instead of one tail in animation.

Does anyone know of a or trial program that will compress to the 5 Kb limit while still maintaining the animation.

One thing I did notice in ReaCompression was the GIF had nine slides making up the animation. Could that number be reduced and therefore reduce the size?
How would that be accomplished?
On the same subject, how does one make an animated GIF and where would you find the software (shareware or would be nice)?

Can you post a link to the animated file so some of us can try our hand at reducing it for you?

Hi Richard

I am working at the moment and just running back ups and DTS packages, very boring on a Sunday night so need a distraction, send it through, us Loungers love a challenge

Was it this image? (Just a guess, it's the same size and fits your description, it will also give Jezza something to do)

If it was that one here is my first attempt, I've shrunk it to avatar size for this lounge and tried various methods to compress it, though the fox appears to have gained some fleas.

Richard

If Tony's image is correct, i have done some work but as it is an image of reasonable quality, it loses some of the definition during dimensional reduction...here is my starter for 10

We have to reduce to 65px(W) x 75px(H) to prevent distortion

Just a comment while waiting for Richard to come back - that's a VERY NICE image and I hope it's the one he's looking at. Good job Tony and Jerry!

I agree, I do like an animal avitar, let us see what he thinks and make some tweaks if so required

Re: Reducing GIF size

Here is my last one,

I have tried a slightly different method of putting an inner rounded bevel to old Sly Fox to give him depth...worth a try

Re: Reducing GIF size

But this one is over 9 KB (and it still needs to be resized to 65x75)
