    Incrementing number/footer (Word XP)

    We need to place an incrementing number in the footer of the document that would increment as the page number increments. But we will already have the page number elswhere in the header or footer; possibly the page number will restart with each section. We would want to set the incrementing number to a specific value on the first page of the document and have it increment by 1 for each page.

    This is sort of a Bates number stamp concept. Is there a field which will both increment for each page and not affect the page number?

    I've tried everything I can think of.

    Thanks,
    Richard Barrett

    Did you explore this thread? Bates Numbering (Word XP). I'm not sure those ideas will help with calculating the "physical" page number, as opposed to the "logical" or assigned page number, but perhaps they point to some other sequential numbering options.

    I was successful with the formula to add a specified number to the page number, but as you suggested the result is based on the logical page number. Since the status bar always shows the physical page number, Word must keep track of that. I just can't determine how to access it.

    Thanks,

    Re: Incrementing number/footer (Word XP)

    Hans, I gave this a try and it works beautifully... as long as the page numbering format is Arabic. If I changed the Table of Contents section to small roman numberals or UC Alpha, the field displayed "Bookmark not found".

    I'll fuss with this a bit and see if there's a switch that will accomodate this. Certainly not every section of a document is expected to have Arabic style numbering.

    Thanks agin for your help.

    Re: Incrementing number/footer (Word XP)

    The field in the page footer looks like

    {={SEQ variable2 c}+{Page}}

    Change this to

    {={SEQ variable2 c}+{Page * Arabic }}

    This forces the page number in this field to be numeric, so that it can be used in calculations.

    Many thanks for this. I was trying to convert the page number, but didn't think about this (obvious!) switch.

    Thanks again,
    Richard
