Remove color from drawing (2002 SP3)

I have a Word document which consists of a drawing of a town plat. The person who prepared the map has different sections of the town color coded as to when they were developed. I'd like to remove all the different colors and have everything black. How would I do that?

What kind of drawing is it? If you press Alt+F8, does it say {EMBED SomeFormatName} or does it just remain a picture? In the former case, the program that handles SomeFormatName probably is the best editor. In the latter case, you can use any image editor.

When I push alt+F8 I get a list of my Macros. So you're thinking it might have been produced in some other application then pasted into the Word document? That could be. I'll ask the guy who drew it. I thought there might be some simple way to just change all the colors to black.

    Sorry, I meant Alt+F9 (toggle field codes). <img src=/S/blush.gif border=0 alt=blush width=15 height=15>

    Hi Clark,

If you only need to suppress the colours for printing, you could change the print setting (Tools|Options|Compatability) to 'print colors as black on non-color printers' - then print on a b/w printer.

Alt+F9 bring up {EMBED MS Draw 1.01}, so it was done with Word's drawing feature.

I changed the printer setting to print colors as black, but the colored parts of the map come out light gray to gray.

If I select the whole drawing and click on the line color palette, all the color choices are grayed out.

Try selecting the parts you want to remove the color from by clicking the first, then Shift+clicking the next one, etc. You should then be able to set the fill color and/or line color for all selected parts at once.

It's all one drawing. I can't select the colored parts separately.

If you select the drawing, is it possible to select Drawing | Ungroup from the Drawing toolbar?

If you double-click the image, does it load into a strange half-Word half-image-editor program? (I try not to use the built-in drawing program, but that's my best guess as to how to access it.) If so, does it let you make changes there?

Re: Remove color from drawing (2002 SP3)

The map takes up most of an 8.5 x 11.5 sheet in landscape view. If I click inside the map, it is bounded by a box with handles and the "Picture" toolbar appears. If I click outside the box the whole thing is selected (sort of a negative look). If I double click inside the box, the Format Picture window comes up. Pulling in the handles and adding fill color seem to be the only things I can do to this map.

Then I fear there's little you can do with this map. I'd ask the person who prepared it for a revised version.
