    Slide Show Software

I sometimes get anywhere from a few to a dozen or so pictures that I want to share with friends. I'd like my friends to be able to click a hyperlink in an email and go to the short slideshow, which I can host on my web site. If possible, I don't want my friends to have to download anything before they can see the show.

My needs are very simple -- just show a short slide show made of pictures I already have in one folder. I don't need something to organize all the photos on my computer, I don't need something to make beautiful transitions between slides, I don't need something to make fancy fixes to my photos, and most of all I don't need something that takes more than a few seconds to set up a short slide show.

I want to say "upload these pictures to here," and have it done quickly and painlessly (I COULD use ftp to upload them to my site). Then I want to email my friends and say "look at this stuff here," and have them click a link to see it. All shows will be short. There will be different shows, and they will never need to be combined. It would be nice if users have some control over moving forward and backward in the show. They don't need to download the photos to their own computers.

I'm willing to pay money for what I need, but it will have to do what I want. It MUST be fast and simple to set up or view a show.

    What should I look at?

Take a look at this. I have no personal experience with it, but it seems to do exactly what you want.

    Re: Slide Show Software

Here's another offering that's completely free and (I think) easy to do. It will however, require YOU to do a little HTML tweaking, but it isn't difficult. The fella at this site is an Aussie Vietnam vet and does a lot of free stuff. I downloaded his Javascript Vault quite some time ago and pick and choose pieces as needed. Here's a couple of links:

His Home Page: My Place - Where Everything is FREE!
Freeware Page: Freeware (this link is in the upper right corner of the home page too) (scroll down to Javascript Vault and download it.)

Since getting used to "finding" his stuff which is sometimes NOT easy to do, I've copied the HTML code for his Slideshow javascript into the attached text file. If you load it into your HTML editor, whatever that might be, and change some things like backgrounds, image names (and folders, etc.) you can "preview" it to see how easily it works. If I can make some time this afternoon, I'll try to make a sample and put it up on my domain.

    Re: Slide Show Software

Not to wait until this afternoon, I did the short test and put it here: http://www.alhoffman.org/temp_slides/slide_test.html

I made all the pics a different size on purpose, to test his comment that the script works best if all are the same size. If you do any dabbling in HTML you should be able to see the words you have to change. I suppose it might be possible to make it even more generic by leaving out the descriptors.

Thanks! It sure looks like it meets my needs. I'll keep my eyes open for alternatives, though.

One thing -- I lack basic knowledge about javascript and what it does. Does it require those who access the web page to have something special installed on their machines? (Some of my users are old fogies with old fogy computers.)

(Nothing against old fogies -- I'm one, myself.)

I'm no expert, Lou, but I don't think you need anything but a browser. Unless a person blocks javascript, most anyone should be able to see the script run.

I checked out Al's link and it sure seems to be exactly what you are looking for. Just click the link and then click the Start button. I'm not doing anything special nor do I have anything "special" installed on my system. I am using IE6 as my browser, as I'm pretty sure most folks do. If you can get over the HTML issue (and that shouldn't be too difficult) I'd bet that this application is "old fogie" proof. <img src=/S/laugh.gif border=0 alt=laugh width=15 height=15>

And just to give you more fodder to think about - there's always Irfanview! I took those same pictures and made a quick-and-dirty "static" page (non-slideshow) in case you really don't need the features of a slide show. In this Irfanview created page, I left the pictures in the original LARGE size so you could see that just about anything is possible. This one ain't fancy but you could do wonders with it if you try:

    Hi Lou,

You could always consider Picassa, You can upload a few pics and get your friends to hit the slideshow button. Can adjust the slide time on screen.

Here's my Online Album if you want to have a test run.

    Re: Slide Show Software

Ages ago, someone here (I'm afraid I can't remember who <img src=/S/whisper.gif border=0 alt=whisper width=29 height=17>but Big Al can, see below) posted a link to this site:
    http://www.dhteumeuleu.com/

All of the scripts there are free, all the author requires is acknowledgement, some of the ones under the 'imgbox' category might be of use.
