Templates (Office 2003 SP2)

What a mixed blessing Vista is! I think I'll enjoy it if I can ever get my computer arranged so it is comfortable to work with again. I saved all my PowerPoint, Word, and Publisher templates to a DVD. I was able to copy all the templates into the very elusive folder c:User NameAppDataRoamingTemplates. Not an easy task but I can see them in the folder.

I was able to access the templates using PowerPoint, but unsuccessful using Word and Publisher. I even tried opening a template from the DVD and saving it on my computer. When I do this, I cannot locate that AppData file!!

This system is driving me nuts. The only folder sthat appear under my user name are the green "link" folders. Any suggestions? I'm really going to be lost if I have to recreate all my templates again.

IF that is where you put your templates, you may have put them in the wrong place. On my system, my Word Templates are located here: c:User NameAppDataRoaming Microsoft Templates.

Oops! That was just frustration boiling over. I also placed my templates in the C:UserNameAppDataRoamingMicrosoftTemplates folder. Please tell me how YOU access this folder. Have you tried placing any personal templates into that folder? Do you see them when using Word and requesting New Document > From a template > On my computer? I don't see any of my templates.

Oh yeh.... I know of that "frustration"!!

Yes, I have some custom-made templates which I use in Word, but they are in their own folders under "Templates". See the attached screenshot for one example. Perhaps THAT is the element you are missing? The Default templates reside in the "Templates" folder, but custom templates should be in their own specific folders as a sub-folder under "Templates".

Thanks! I'll try it. Will I be able to see them when I open the "On my computer" window in Word? Are you familiar with Publisher?

What really frustrates me, is when I try to use a piece of software and choose File > Open, I cannot see the darned AppDataRoamingMicrosoftTemplates folders. Why are they so difficult to access?

Yea! Thank you, thank you!

It worked. I can now use my templates in Word, Publisher AND PowerPoint!

Now...if I can just get Outlook configured the way I want, I will be a much happier person!!!

Actually, I can see my custom templates in Word when I click on "File/New/On this computer". So, are you saying that when you open Windows Explorer and drill down the folder tree, C:UserusernameAppDataRoamingMicrosoftTemplates does not exist? IF <-------= that is the case, perhaps you need to change an option in "Views"....

1. Open Windows Explorer
2. Click on "Organize" (far left on the Menubar"
3. Click on "Folders and search options"
4. Click on the "View" tab
5. Put a check in "Show Hidden Files and Folders" (while in there, you should also UNcheck, "Hide extensions for known file types".
6. "OK" your way out.

In the "Templates" folder you should be able to see the default: "Normal.dot" template.

Unfortunately, I am not familiar with Publisher. You may have better results posting your question about Word and/or Publisher in their respective forums here.

Jeff, thank you. It does work. I can now see my templates in both Word and Publisher. I am very, very happy.

I mistakenly posted my reply to tell you that all was well back to MY last posting and didn't realize you hadn't received it.

You gave me very good information and I appreciate it. I wouldn't want to approach my computer without my friends from Woody's Lounge!
