Dreamweaver, access databases and web payments

I hae a friend who is creating a web site in dreamweaver that people will buy from. She would like to link this to here customer/stock database in Access. Also she would like people to make payments that get reflected in this database.

    Where would I start?

Sorry for the broad brief but thats all I got!

    Thanks

I suggest your friend buy a "shopping cart" from companies that sell web components. Programming the cart is tricky work, securing it requires good knowledge of application vulnerabilities and attack patterns, and the risk of getting it wrong is now extremely high with the potential for online fraud and public disclosure about data protection.

Presumably these scripts/frameworks are available for both PHP-based and ASP/ASP.Net based sites, although for an Access database, the Windows products might require less conversion. Hope this helps.

Paypal offer a free shopping cart system and offer the payment processing system at no cost (But they do charge per payment a percentage). Other than that, there's the OS commerce cart system...

Other than that, you *can* program a cart system in PHP / mySQL, but i would not recommend doing that, unless you have experience... plus it takes ages. (yawn)

Along those same lines, I am a fledgling developer and one of my clients has just signed up with Paymentech for credit card authorizations. I am arguing with Paymentech regarding the fact that they want my page to have been created as a secure page and then they will plug their gateway into it. It seems to me that the liabilities for someone's credit card information would have to fall on me--not Paymentech. Does anyone out there have a feel for this? I currently have this client set up with PayPal to receive Donations, but they want to get more sophisticated and have credit card capability. I just don't want to jump in without any knowledge of how much trouble I can get myself into. I would appreciate any advice. Thanks. Penni

There is a wide range. It sounds as though in this case your client's server would be gathering card information and submitting it to the service provider. Perhaps it would be better -- to reduce risk -- to use a fully developed service that accepts "order" information and handles the entire card transaction on its site. That might be an option from this same company at a higher price.

Although I don't know anything about working with them, I know that oftentimes my orders with smaller companies are processed and fulfilled by element 5.
