    Word to PDF conversion freeware

Any recommendations for a good, free programme to convert Word files to PDF?

Re: Word to PDF conversion freeware

There are so many of these, found from a Google search (for example).

For my limited requirements, I use CutePDF Writer, which, according to the review at the bottom of the web page, is a firm favourite with someone who likes to overuse the word "cool"...

PS I suppose we should give thanks that it wasn't described as "awesome"!

Another free program that is mentioned frequently in the Lounge is pdf995.

If you use Office 2007 you can get the <img src=/S/free.gif border=0 alt=free width=30 height=15> Download details: 2007 Microsoft Office Add-in: Microsoft Save as PDF or XPS.

The recently released PrimoPDF 3.0 has additional features not found in some other free (and popup-free) programs, but it does connect to the web when you print to check for updates, which bothers some people.

The size of the (14MB) download bothers me a bit. How many extra features does this juggernaut have? <img src=/S/grin.gif border=0 alt=grin width=15 height=15>

I should do a comparison, but that would have to be on my home computer later.

Note that CutePDF is a smaller download because it doesn't include the GhostScript parts. The CutePDF installer will automatically download those for you. I believe this is for license reasons (GhostScript is open source). When you total it all up, I don't think they were appreciably different. I'll have to check later.

You're right. GNU Ghostscript Lite (used by CutePDF) and AFPL Ghostscript (used by PrimoPDF) are inexplicably very different in size. Here's a page describing some differences between PDF printers: http://jeffersonscher.com/soft/pdfprinters.html. Note: large screen shots.

Try OpenOffice 2.0 or 2.1. You can convert Word and Excel files ... and it's free !!!
