    won't recognize USB key

My Toshiba laptop (Portege 3480CT) with Win98 on it will not recognize my USB keys -- even if I open up System and refresh USB mass storage and USB hub. Rebooting with the USB key installed does not help. However, the LED in the USB key does light up, so it is getting power.

    Can anyone help??

You may need to go to the OEM web page and down load drivers for that "Brand" of thumb drive.

Has this ever worked? Do you have a new device? Do you have the Toshiba USB drivers - see "windows 98" usb driver toshiba 3480ct - Google Search for a few links to drivers.

not sure what you mean by "this" -- has this ever worked --

I have used different usb drives from different manfs. and NONE works on the laptop, but ALL work just fine on several other computers.

I cannot find any link in that search that pulls up a driver - is there a way to see if the Laptop has the right one by examining it? I assume it has some usb driver as it can use other usb devices just fine and various usb driver info shows up in the System icons.

Most of the thumb drives require a driver to used on a Windows 98 system. What make and model are some of these drives that you have tried?
Are any of the other computers running Windows 98?

I will go to the OEM's web page and see what I can find.

The main one is a Transcend JFV30 (if I can read the tiny letter right) - it is 1 Gbyte

    Thanks much!

FWIW, also tried a flippable SD camera card (flips to usb) - SanDisk Ultra II - 1 Gbyte & the other is now at the office ... it was also a SanDisk form a few years ago; 500 Meg

    Re: won't recognize USB key

If you go to Welcome to Transcend Website and click on the appropriate items in the center section (I think yours is a V series under Product Type). You should be able to download a Windows 98 driver . This http://www.transcendusa.com/Support/DLCent...win98driver.zip should be the correct link.

For the SanDisk you need to go to the SanDisk support site and find a Win98 download.

    Re: won't recognize USB key

Thanks much! I had no idea Win98 supported some USB devices and not others (mass storage). Now I just need to figure out how to get the driver over to the laptop -- maybe I can find the old floppy it came with.

Well, it's 3+ Mbytes - too large for a floppy.

    Any ideas?

The Portege has USB, PCMCIA, serial, parallel, but no CD-ROM drive.

    Re: won't recognize USB key

Can't you just download it to the notebook? If not, is it networked (or can it be) so you could just copy it from a shared folder?

    Re: won't recognize USB key

How about burning the driver file to a CD and moving it to your 98 machine?

    <img src=/S/whisper.gif border=0 alt=whisper width=29 height=17> Maybe you could back up other items to that CD to make burning to it worthwhile......... <img src=/S/grin.gif border=0 alt=grin width=15 height=15> My <img src=/S/2cents.gif border=0 alt=2cents width=15 height=15> worth.

    How about a USB key ??? <img src=/S/innocent.gif border=0 alt=innocent width=20 height=20> <img src=/S/smile.gif border=0 alt=smile width=15 height=15>

Seriously, have you considered a Floppy Spanning Program to put the drivers file on multiple floppy disks and then install it on the laptop ???
