Not Pink Floyd

This has caused a bit of a [hem] [hem] discussion this week at work and I even saw someone snap their pencil in half.

(We must assume Earth and its moon)

If the sun is there, then it is over there, away from the sun.

So are you saying It is on the opposite side of the light side?

At any given time there will be a light side and a dark side - BUT, there is no FIXED dark side of the moon as the sun shines on all of it at some time or another.

    Re: Not Pink Floyd

So as this caused such a discussion at work, what happens when The moon is eclipsed by the Earth ie Earth comes in between the Moon and Sun Just being the Devil's advocate

    Re: Not Pink Floyd

Well obviously the dark side that was there before the eclipse will still be there, and there will be another dark side (albeit probably not quite as dark) temporarily on what was the light side.

However, as the terms 'light side' and 'dark side' are only used as descriptive references by us earthlings, what was/is the light side during an eclipse is still the light side wrt the dark side as we think of it.Thus, the dark side remains the opposite side to the light side.

Is this the same sort of thing as if you hung a big mirror up to reflect light from the sun onto the 'dark side' of the moon, would it still be the dark side? And does chewing gum lose it's flavour on the bedpost overnight?

    Re: Not Pink Floyd

I totally agree with you, the [nerds] in the development area at work saw it completely scientifically and answered as per you....bbbbuuuuttt there were a couple of people from the project teams who argued quite eloquently that The dark side of the moon is in fact another term for The far side of the Moon and is the bit we do not see as an astronautically challenged human stuck to terra firma

Have a piece of [moon cheese]

Anyway is it a rabbit or a man in the Moon?

Has the origins of this puzzle got anything to do with what will happen on Saturday?

A total eclipse will be visible in the Magic Forest (weather permitting)

Excellent, I was just trying to work out the rough distance but it sounds reasonable to say about 70 miles(ish)

    Re: Not Pink Floyd

In Europe we should see all of the eclipse providing it is not raining. Those Loungers in eastern parts of the USA & Canada will see the eclipse as the moon rises. The further west you go in America, less of the eclipse will be visible. Aussies will only see a little if anything of the eclipse as the moon sets.

Well, then it is as formulated by Pink Floyd - "There is no dark side of moon really. Matter of fact, it's all dark."
