Sections with NO page numbering (Word 2000)

I have a page-numbering problem that is annoying me in Word 2000, although I have no reason to think it would be any different elsewhere.

The 17-page document consists of two chunks

Word should behave the way you want if you do what you describe. Check carefully that you have really turned off "Same as Previous" for the header of section 2.

I agree.
I have retested this morning on my home/office machine with 97, 2000 & 2003, as distinct from the client machine with 2000.
Same result.

>Check carefully that you have really turned off "Same as Previous" for the header of section 2.
Done, by clicking the button a SECOND time and obtaining this diagnostic (after which I cancel out of there)

Could you attach a sample document with dummy text?

Hans, I appreciate your implicit offer of help.
The attached doc is the original doc with pages 9 onwards trimmed (Edit, Goto, 9; Shift-Ctrl-End).

I have just tried again using Word 2000 (9.0.2720) using steps 2, 4, 6 and 9 with the same results.

I thought, "This *has* to be some sort of corruption in the document, because it so obviously ought to work, but fails in 97, 2000, 2003 & 2007", but have just tried pasting a 156KB log file (TXT) into a fresh document, followed steps 2, 4, 6, 9 with the same results.

Perhaps the fact that the document has been set to have different first page headers and footers in the Layout tab of File | Page Setup has something to do with it.
I did the following:
- Inserted a Next Page section break at the end of page 2.
- Clicked in page 3 and selected File | Page Setup...
- Cleared the 'Different first page' check box, made sure the change would only apply to This section and clicked OK.
- Selected View | Header and Footer.
- Made sure that 'Same as previous' was off.
- Inserted a page number.
- Closed header/footer.
This resulted in page numbering as intended. See attached version.

Bingo!
And thanks.

I think it's a bug.

Hans:
1.
Insert Break

Different First page this section

Disconnect Headers this section

Insert Page Number
Chris:
1.
Insert Break

(omitted)

Disconnect Headers this section

Insert Page Number
Setting Different First page this section ought only to be having an impact on This Section - section 2 - right?
As well, "different first page" (of a section) is quite different from "show page numbers in headers", first page or not, in a different section.

Thanks for the feedback. I'll lay this to rest by reporting back to the client that I think it's a bug.
My puzzlement was intensified after I ran my steps past the client's help desk lady - a very bright one - who agreed that my steps ought to work.
As well I had searched the lounge to see if anyone else had experienced the problem. My search terms turned up nothing relevant.

Re: Sections with NO page numbering (Word 2000)

Frankly, I don't think there's a bug involved here. It also works if I turn off "Same as previous" and insert the page number before turning off "Different first page", then delete the page number from section 1. But you have to be aware that you can control "Same as previous" for each header individually: if you turn if off for the first page header, you haven't automatically turned it off for the header of subsequent pages. So if you insert the page number in the first page, for example, and turn of "Same as previous" for the subsequent page header, deleting the page number from the first page of section 1 will still delete the page number in section 2 too!
