Start up errors (Windows XP Professional SP2)

My computer is taking over 5 minutes to restart. I checked event manager (System) and there are 4 error messages every time I restart. They all seem to refer to McAfee. I removed McAfee 9 months ago. I have now followed McAfee's instructions for a complete removal including the registry. However, I still get the same error messages and a long boot up time. Attached in a shot of one of the messages.

Start>Control Panel>Administrative Tools>Services and see if any McAfee related services are trying to start. If you find any, disable them. If this doesn't solve the problem, download and run AutoRuns . Check the Logon tab and uncheck (or delete) any McAfee related items there.

I think I am going to pay the $5.95 just to get the article. I ran AutoRuns and was shocked.
    Thanks John

Did you find any startup entries that were causing the problem?

All of my computers start up just fine. When I ran that program, I was just schocked to see how many programs were actually running and want to read and learn more.
    Thanks John

Re: Start up errors (Windows XP Professional SP2)

Hi. I ran AutoRuns on my computer that takes for ages to bootup. I printed the lists of autoruns and to my dismay I had 17 pages of them, mostly Microsoft. I don't have a clue as to which I can deactivate so I haven't touched them. Any suggestions?

In the Options tab, check "Hide signed Microsoft entries", then File>Refresh (or close AutoRuns and then open it again), and look at the entries in the Logon section. Each of these has a description and you should be able to isolate the non essential items. Many programs place entries here, but by looking at the descriptions or by Googling the entries, you should be able to determine whether or not they are really required.

Can't help but wonder how JimHaynes is making out on this? The post was 3 Mar. but he hasn't been back yet with a report.

I was wondering about that as well. It would be helpful if he replied and indicated whether or not the problem was resolved.

Re: Start up errors (Windows XP Professional SP2)

I have after a long deliberation changed items on administrative tools/services disabling a few, but mostly changing automatics to manual, so as not to cause too much disruption and because I didn't know what the effect of disabling them would do. My PC now boots up much faster and to a happy level.

If we didn't fix things that wasn't broke, we would never have reached the moon.
