AntiVirus Comparison Report

I found this recent report that compares various anti-virus software for how well they do their job. It's listed on http://www.consumerworld.org/ at the top "Anti-virus Software Test Results" (week of Mar 5, 2007). I downloaded it too (it's PDF) but can not attach it since it's 634 KB (and zipping it does nothing). I haven't had a chance to review it but wanted to pass it on to others.

    Thanks.

For others: these comparisons of anti-virus software (just like comparisons of anti-spyware programs) are useful, but they should be taken with a grain of salt. Over the pasty few years, many tests have been published in which some of the well-known players in this field performed badly, others in which the same ones ended near the top of the list. It depends very much what exactly is tested. One that excels in one month may well disappoint the next month. So don't attach too high a value to these test results.
My general (and very unscientific) impression is that regardless of test results, *all* of the better-known anti-virus programs (both commerical and free) offer adequate protection for the "normal" user. The important thing is to have protection against viruses and spyware, to keep it up-to-date and to use real-time protection.

    Re: AntiVirus Comparison Report

I agree totally. Just like no one search engine hits all web sites (I prefer the specialized search engines over Google on occasion), no one anti-virus (or spam) program knows and tracks all viruses.

I mentioned it more as an FYI since some of the programs I'd never heard of. Might be useful as a list of other AV products to try out.

Gosh -- in their PDF AV-Comparatives could certainly learn something about presentation of large amounts of data in A4 format!

On the web, this page comes out better (linked from a Register article about One-Care)

John - your first link produces a 404 page not found. Should be here I think.

The link worked when I posted it, but they seem now to prevent linking to pages some way down from their main site...

    Yep

Only links to our main site are allowed.

Apparently they redirect all 'deep' links to the 404 Page.

But if on the 404 page they direct you to you press enter again with the URL still in the address bar, it does take you to the page you want.

    Re: AntiVirus Comparison Report

I have to refresh the page (F5) to do that. Perhaps our web design gurus can tell you how this is done...

I can't believe they didn't include Computer Associates' product - eTrust Antivirus. They includes several I've never heard of before but didn't include one that I would have thought to be in the top five. We've been quite happily using it at the office since 1999.

One more reason not to take such reviews too seriously...

    Re: AntiVirus Comparison Report

There was no message, but as the URL was highlighted in the address bar, I wondered what would happen if I pressed enter, and it loaded the page (using Opera 9).

There was a comment that they plan to do another report soon because there were so many products to test.
