Delete User Account (WinXP Home SP2)

I've tried everything to delete a user account. I've deleted the password, changed the way users log on, tried to save the files, tried to delete the files, even tried safe mode but I just can't get rid of the dang thing. There must be some way to force this. Maybe through the registry? I've got backups of the data so I'm not worried there, just trying to streamline things on my daughter's computer.

Just checking to make sure so don't shoot me, have you logged on as an Admin account?

What account are you trying to delete?
Any of the "System" accounts you can NOT delete and you MUST have at least one user account.
And as Jerry asked, you MUST be in a user account with Admin permissions to delete an other user account.

Jerry, Dave, I am, of course, logged on as Administrator and I wanted to delete the one other user account. What is happening is that the delete function hangs and eventually I get a "user accounts not responding" (or similar) error.

p.s. Dave I clicked on your Blue Star link and it looks like you might have some layout or word wrap probs. I tried to send you a jpg but the screen print is too large (361 kb)

Did you log out from that account or did you "Switch user" out of it?
You MUST be logged out of the user account and not just switched away from it, in order to delete the account.


After reading your reply, are you logged into the "Administrator" account and not a user account?
This administrator account should NOT be used except when all else fails or while in the safe mode. If you read my reply earlier, I stated that you MUST have one user account that is NOT any of the "Systems" accounts, and "THE ADMINISTRATOR" account is a system account. That said, some OEM's have set up machines that use "The Administrator" account and it has been renamed to owner or whatever and this may create problems later.

What is the account name of that "one other user account" ? I want to make sure that you are NOT trying to delete a system account.

I don't want to state the obvious, but have you gone into Control Panel>User Accounts, clicked on the account you want to delete and then selected Delete Account from the menu ??

I've just posted a different problem (Office 2000 - MS Photo Editor) for a different computer and realized that I never got back to you to let you know that my User Account problem is resolved. Sorry. <img src=/S/sorry.gif border=0 alt=sorry width=15 height=15>
