    Tasks Durations Linked (2003)

    Hi,
Is it possible to make the duration of a task dependent on another task. Meaning if task 3 duration is changed to 3 days then task 5's duration is also changed to that same duration.
    Thanks,
    Deb

Link task 5 to task 3 as a start to start and finish to finish.

It gives me an error message telling me I can't link a task twice to the same successor task.
    Thanks,
    Deb

Sorry, I misunderstood your question. Set both tasks to the same predecessors and successors with the same lead / lag times if any.

    Re: Tasks Durations Linked (2003)

Ok, I think I'm the one that is sorry now, I don't understand your response. When I try to set task 3 to 5 and task 5 to 3, it gives me an error. When I make task 5 pred 3 and task 3 succ 5, it won't give me an error message but when I then change the duration of task 3, task 5's duration does not change. What am I doing wrong?
    Thanks,
    Deb

    Re: Tasks Durations Linked (2003)

    Deb,

Are you saying you want the second task to adjust to the same duration of the first task if the duration of the first task is changed or do you mean that if the first task ends early, you want to adjust the second task to end at the same time?

In the second scenario, you would set a finish to finish constraint. In the first scenario, if you change the duration of one task you want the duration of the second task to match. I would have to ask if there are resources assigned to the task and how is the task setup. (Resource driven, fixed effort or duration, etc.) Also, why would the duration of the task suddenly change?

My guess is that I am just not understanding your question. Are the tasks related in any way? Have same pred or succ? Constraints? Resources?
    Regards,

    Gary

    Re: Tasks Durations Linked (2003)

    Gary,
Your first question. I want the duration to change. Well this is a scenario that i am testing to see if you can even do it. There will be resources that are in a pool. the 2 tasks will be linked somehow, depends on your answer. But the way a couple tasks are, if task 3 takes 3 days then task 5 (or whatever number task) will take the same amount as well. I believe the tasks are fixed units (the default). I will have to check but I am at home today and the file is at work. The tasks have no constraints. And until i can figure out how to link the 2, no pred or succ. I simply just want to know if I can link two tasks, using anyway possible, where is the duration changes in one of the tasks, the other duration will be the same.
Thanks for all your help Gary,
    Deb
