New HDD - what to do with the old?

I replaced a 30 gig notebook HDD on my Dell 5150 inspiron with a 120 gig HDD and I am a happy camper.

But what to do with the smaller HDD? It is functional and with the OS [Win XP SP2 and Dell install partition] still on it. I uninstalled all the software except for the OS and some other MS software before I removed the old HDD.

I would like to be able to sell the old HDD on Craigs list but I'm afraid there still might be some personal data hidden on it somewhere. How can I clear the old HDD so that it is completely clean of any software including the OS? Can I stick it back in the machine and reformat the drive and then remove it?

Probably the only (cheap) way would be to put the old disk back in the laptop and boot something like DBAN or EraserD from a previously-created bootable floppy or bootable CD, to erase all the data from the old disk.

How much are you going to get for a 30 GB hard disk without an operating system on it, though?

    John,
Thanks for a VERY helpful post. Using DBAN I was able to erase the drive [FYI everybody - 30 gig drive needed 25 hours] and sell it on CraigsList for $15 - which was a good price since I had no other use for it.

Well done! Good to see it could be reused...
