    Notification sounds (Home)

Again, forgive me for not knowing the appropriate Board for the question:

Since getting DSL, I also hear (Windows?) sounds (i.e., wav..) but I don't know what they signify. I went to Control Panel/Sounds, but that didn't give me much info as to what sound is associated with what action.

Is it at all possible to figure this out?

    Thanks again,
    Acer

Have you looked at the Sounds tab of the Sounds and Audio Devices control panel? The Program Event box lists events, if there is a little loudspeaker icon to the left of the event, it has a sound associated with it. Click on the event to see the name of the sound in the box near the bottom, and click the "Play" button next to it to hear the sound.

Yes, Hans, I did that before contacting the Board. The trouble is, I guess, I can't remember the (different) sounds - I went with the defaults.

Will pay more attention when I hear them.

    Thank you.

One of the ways to "figure out" what the sounds signify is to look for changes on the screen, especially in the System Tray (lower right corner). When something happens on your system that is usually the first place some indication of what happened, shows up (USB device connected or disconnected, Anti-virus Alerts, Updates, etc). I seem to recall an earlier post, <post:=637,478>post 637,478</post:>, where you were having problems with hiding the icon in the System Tray for a Netgear peripheral that was USB. Was there any sound associated with that icon when it appeared, or was it always present in the system tray ?? Perhaps the internet connection is being dropped and (I'm assuming that the Netgear appliance is a router, modem or combination of the two) when it reconnects it makes the sound of a USB device being connected. Listen to the attachment and see if this is the sound you are hearing.

    Mornin' Doc -

Thank you for your suggestions, especially looking at Systray for changes. But, there are no changes to Systray that I can determine.

There was no sound with Netgear - yes, it was present in systray. Thanks for supplying the sound. However, it was not what I hear. What I hear is (are) higher sounds. I will try to train my ears to distinguish the sounds.

    'preciate your time,

    Morning Acer, <img src=/S/smile.gif border=0 alt=smile width=15 height=15>

Have you tried previewing the system sounds by following Hans suggestion of going into Control Panel>Sounds and Audio Devices>Sounds tab and using the Preview function at the bottom of the window ??? You might be able to pin down the event by hearing the sound and matching the event to the sound. One drawback is that there are some different functions (add or remove a USB device comes to mind) that use the same sound. HTH

Yes, Doc, as I mentioned in a prevous post, I had tried the preview function before contacting the Board. And, as you say, "One drawback is that there are some different functions that use the same sound."

I will do as you suggest, monitor sound with any change I discern.

    Thanks for the follow up,
    Acer

Sorry. I really need to read the previous posts more carefully. I missed that entire sentence in Hans post about the Sounds tab.
