Protected mode (IE 7 Vista Premium)

In IE7 using Vista Home Premium the protected Mode is set to off (currently). Somehow, I managed to do this, as the modem I use to access the net has it own built in firewall I believed I had to turn this off (Protected Mode) to gain access to the modem and the net. Having now read a bit more about the subject I am wondering if I should have chosen a better option (not to turn off the Protected mode) as it appears that IE7 using Vista is isolated from the Vista system (Sandboxed) . If this is correct how do I turn on Protected Mode and allow the modem to gain internet access.

Re: Protected mode (IE 7 Vista Premium)

from here.....
"you can turn off Protected Mode by double-clicking the lower right corner of any IE window, and on the resulting Internet Security dialog box (shown in Figure 2), unchecking the Enable Protected Mode box. You'll have to restart IE to make the change effective."

I don't have Vista and thus can't check this out as Protected Mode is a Vista IE7 feature, but I would assume that reversing this process will get you to the Internet Security dialog box and allow you to recheck that box.

Doc,
-------------------------------------------------
by double-clicking the lower right corner of any IE window, and on the resulting Internet Security dialog box
--------------------------------------------------

After clicking all over the lower right corner of the IE windows, I must admit, I must not have been doing something right? Just couldn't get any action. Is there a CERTAIN part of the lower right corner to click?

Bob,
If you are not running IE7 as installed with Vista, I don't believe the "protected mode" setting is available.

Re: Protected mode (IE 7 Vista Premium)

Your suggestionof the lower right hand corner of any IE screen in VISTA IE 7 is correct to be precise it's location is to the left of the phishing filter notification at the bottom of the browser window. But I digress from my problem - I have been to your suggested area and yes at one stage on some of the tabs I had turned off the tick (indicating to turn off protected mode) but for over a week now these have been on and at their default level and still no change. There is automatically a feature in Vista with IE7 that is launched at start up in the auto load programs in the lower right of screen it's appearance is a shield which is red and a x through it, if you hover over & click this it will take you to the IE7 security centre entry level screen. In this screen you are presented with Windows update, firewall and defender panels on the left which you can click on and change to on / off all set to on in addition is the internet option which take you the default screen in your post. All these are set to there defaults but I still can not get protected mode to function.

From your original <post:=637,636>post 637,636</post:> .....
"how do I turn on Protected Mode and allow the modem to gain internet access."

So do you have internet access via the modem now ??? It would seem that Protected Mode is, in fact, activated and running. Since I am running XP and IE6 I cannot recreate your situation on my system. Perhaps one of our Vista experienced Loungers can offer some insight.

Re: Protected mode (IE 7 Vista Premium)

Yes I have internet access hence these replies. however, the area on the very bottom line of IE7 is still telling me that the Internet protected mode is off. I would capture an image of this if I knew how. But I digress it is as I state protected mode is OFF. I used the term modem originally as a description only it is in fact ADSL Router.

Re: Protected mode (IE 7 Vista Premium)

(Edited by glenlisa2 on 11-Mar-07 15:54. Additional Info)
It appears from further investigation that the problems of protected mode being on or off is brought about by whether you have the UAC control enabled or not. If not - enabled mode is off and if enabled is on if all defaults are configured there should be no problem. I have made another post to Vista concerning the Windows Security Alerts button in the auto start area. The button is of a shield red in colour with an X across the shield. If you right click this button it opens the Security Centre checking all the settings with defaults checked it tell you the Security Centre is turned off but clicking the turn on button brings up an error window that says the securit centre cannot be started.
And thought I had this figured out - well am I the fool - without me doing anything other then logging out and shutting down - I am back to the Protected mode off status - frustration comes to mine!
