    SM Bus Controller (XP Pro SP2)

    On my son's computer he's been having trouble running many games. I was attempting to update his video card driver. I downloaded the newer driver and it said to uninstall NVIDIA from add/remove programs. I did that, then it said it had to reboot. I tried running the install driver and it said that didn't find anything to match it to upgrade. It also upon rebooting said that two new devices were found. In the control panel is shows that two items have exclamation marks: "other PCI bridge device" and "SM Bus controller". It never found the drivers automatically to install; plus the internet connection is down.

    Grrr, what did I just do? How can I fix this mess?

    I'm also probably needing to upgrade the video card itself to something for his games. Anything you recommend? (cheap)

    His computer is an AMD 1.81 Hz with 256 MB RAM.
    The video card driver: Nvidia Riva TNT2 Model 64/Model 64 Pro

    Immediately roll back your Windows installation (Start > All Programs > Accessories > System Tools > System Restore) to the date before you tried to upgrade the driver (the date must be marked bold).

    Upgrade your video driver from Device Manager only! The proper procedure is:

    - Unzip the driver you downloaded (open .exe file with WinZIP, WinRAR or similar program and extract all files) to a separate folder;

    - Open Device Manager (click Start | Run, type DEVMGMT.MSC and hit Enter), navigate to your video adapter (under Display Adapters), right-click it and from pop-up menu select "Update driver";
    - or, as alternative, right-click your desktop on emty space (not on icon), from pop-up menu choose Properties, on Display Properties window click Settings tab and then Advanced button; on the next window click Adapter tab, then Properties button; and on the next window click Driver tab and "Update Driver" button

    - On Hardware Update wizard select "No, not at this time" on the first question, "Install from the list or specific location (Advanced)" on the second question, "Don't search. I will choose driver to install" on the third question, click "Have Disk..." button on the next screen, click "Browse" on the next and point the wizard to the folder you extracted your driver. Navigate through subfolders until you found corresponding .inf file, select it and click Open, OK, OK. If you get a message that it has no driver for your device, you downloaded a wrong driver.

    P.S.: Don't fix what isn't broken! <img src=/S/smile.gif border=0 alt=smile width=15 height=15>

    Re: SM Bus Controller (XP Pro SP2)

    Thanks! I only had one day last week on Friday to choose from and that worked. So, now I'm back to what I had. Thanks!

    I did try to update the driver and it said that it didn't need to...even though the date was newer on the web.

    ...anyway...in order for him to do any games I'll need to upgrade the video card itself. Anything you'd recommend for gaming?
