    Need a 'search and count' formula (Excel 2003)

    I am attaching a sample for review; I need a formula that will search the range c5:c10 and count the number of CELLS that contain apple, or, orange, or, pear etc etc.....eg: orange is in 3 cells...thanks.

    Put the formula below in cell F5 and then copy it to G5:J5.

    <code>
    =COUNTIF($C$5:$C$10,"*"&F4&"*")
    </code>

    Hi There

    You need the countif function with wild card. In F5 I typed =COUNTIF($C$5:$C$10,"*"& F4 &"*")

    I have added the adapted wb for your enjoyment <img src=/S/grin.gif border=0 alt=grin width=15 height=15>
