Can't Delete Section Breaks! (Word 97/SR2)

Small files, no special formatting, recently converted from WordPerfect 8 to Word 97/SR2. Many section breaks have been inserted and we've been searching and replacing them to get rid of them with great success until now. One file has section breaks that refuse to die! The system says none are found after using search, however, the status bar section counter says otherwise. Also, the headers and footers are numbered as Sections 1, 3, 4, and 5.

    Any suggestions?

Create new blank document. Open "bad" doc and select everything except the final paragraph mark. Press Ctrl-Q and then Ctrl-[space]. Then Ctrl-C, switch to new doc, Ctrl-V.

    How about those breaks now?

    Tracy,

Another suggestion would be to turn on the option to show hidden text, if it isn't presently on - does this makes the missing section breaks appear?

    Tracy

I usually see this behaviour when Track Changes is turned on. Have a look at the status bar on the bottom of the Window and if the TRK is black then revisions are being tracked. Double click that or turn off the protection the slow way if there is a password.

    Andrew,

If Tracey's problem is the result of section breaks having been deleted while Track Changes was turned on, I don't think simply turning off Track Changes will eliminate the problem. Any tracked change that contains a deleted section break needs to be accepted before the status bar will display the correct number of sections.
